Underclocking 8800gt to minimum clocks

I was thinking of using riva tuner to underclock my 8800gt to the minimum clocks (less then half the stock clocks) when I'm not gaming to to reduce power consumption and heat. When I want to game, I'd just use a hotkey for Riva tuner to active the overclocked profile, then underclock it again when I'm done.

Is this a bad idea? Can I damage the card like this?

No i dont see how that would damage anything making something run slower. Ive dont that with many cards especially on laptop video cards. No problems yet.

As long as your system is stable (doesn't take much for 2d desktop) then it's fine.

You should look into the RivaTuner Launcher Items though, instead of hitting a hotkey it can switch when you open a game.

You will not manage to reduce the power consumption to a point that matters, is you just downclock it. You should also reduce the voltage, but that is not possible, so I'd would just leave it alone. Better use your power saving features from your cpu, if you really want to spend less on your power bill.

Ummm...

Is the heat bothering you? Is the power making a noticeable dent in your electric bill?

I think EVGA's Precision Tuner will let you use hotkeys to change OC/UC profiles. That should work.
