Hi Guys,

I have a noname laptop(Netlux). It has a desktop PIII 650/100 cpu in it and it runs pretty happy. But lately, since I often go to libraries and find the quietest place to study, I find myself annoying to others because the fan is fairly loud when it is turned on once a while. It is also a little embarassing because I don't hear others' laptop fans. So, I decided to make it fanless, and have done that by disconnecting the 3 pin connector.

I tested 30 minutes itune with visulization, which used 100% cpu, without a crash, but the heatsink did get so hot that you don't want to put your finger on it for 2 seconds. So I guess for word, internet explorer, that should be OK. But I would like to make it more stabler.

I intended to buy a PIII 900 something and replace the PIII650 in my laptop. The PIII650 is socket 370 and 100Mhz bus. There is no way to change the bus speed and multiplier through BIOS configuration. It must be a hardware thing like old motherboards.

Do you think PIII 9xx with 133MHZ bus will work and run at 650Mhz in my laptop ?
Do you think it will reduce the temperature ?

Thanks!

First of all, the 933MHz Pentium uses a 7X multiplier. So it will run in your notebook at 700MHz. Second, the default core voltage will be 1.65 to 1.70v, the same for both cpu's. The temperature will be about the same, and letting your heatsink get that hot is inviting disaster. The hot heatsink will heat up the motherboard and the onboard graphics chip as well, much hotter than the manufacturer intended. The cpu will probably do it OK, but the rest of the stuff will be put on borrowed time. Maybe try to find a quieter fan, but fanless is dangerous.

Do you think I can replace the desktop PIII 650 with a PIII mobile 650 or 800 ? I have heard before that they are essentially the same processors except that mobile version generates less heat.

Desktop PIII is a standard socket 370 FCPGA format. The mobile version is a different format, Micro FCPGA2, different physical pin configuration.

Thanks! That ended my googling and ebay search. I guess I will run it fanless since word and internet explorer are all I need, and the fan just kicked in ocasionally before. But, Thanks!
