Underclock ATI 9700 Pro AGP card?

Does anyone know how much you can underclock an ATI 9700 Pro AGP video card? I want to install the card so I can play 3D games if and when I want to, but I want to underclock its 2D and 3D so when I'm surfing/word processing and using spreadsheets etc, its running slower and cooler. I believe Rivatuner can do this for the 9800 Pro. Can it be done to the same extent on the 9700 Pro?

thats not entirely true, excessive underclocking can actually produce artifacts, don't go nuts underclocking it.
 
hmm. never really tried that. exprimented with my rage pro a few years back. getting core from 75mhz to 50mhz and mem from a ground breaking 100mhz to 60mhz. then promptly oced it to 150/175 and stayed there with a old 80mm fan blowing on it. cool to the touch.
 
As an aside, could I underclock my ATI Rage 3D Pro 8 MB AGP card too? Pure curiosity. I'm mainly interested in the underclocking of the 9700 Pro.

What do I use to underclock? This rivatuner thingy?
 
ATI tool shows I can go down to:

0.0.23 is the latest I believe.

29 on core

26 on Memory.

I havent tried though.

You can't really underclock memory, AFAIK, but you can try underclocking the core. Don't know how much it'll save you, though. You're probably better off just slapping a VGA Silencer on there.

You got your RagePro to 150/175? OMFG. Nice job. I had mine running at 90/100, with the AGP 2X bus also set to 100Mhz. It was almost, but not quite, as fast as a V2 PCI card. I bet if I had managed to get the OC that you did, it would have actually been a bit faster than a V2. Wow.
 
I know ATItool can be set for diff core/mem speeds in 2D and 3D. I've run my 9800 for quite some time using these tools. As far as underclocking the 9700, there is a limit. It's been a while since I've had one, but IIRC its somewhere down around 100/100 when I was experimenting as to how low it could go.
 
Cool. For regular WP, SS and internet, there's no need. I just like tweaking and saving electricity. Its sort of a project to collect data for people going off grid 🙂 Instead of saying "You must only use a laptop/notebook" I can find out how little electricity you can use with a desktop tweaked.
 
Oh man.... Underclockers. Are you running a mini-pc or something? Why worry about the video card temp? I have that card and I never have problems... It is overclocked as well. Are you like trying to lower the overall case temperature so your overclocked system can run more stably? Huh....
 
I say why in my post. I'm just trying to cut electricity use everywhere I can on my PC while maintaining full capacity for computing/gaming. Its to see how little power I can use for telling off-grid people what they can get away with.
