If I'm not mistaken what nonlnear said was that 'It's not like the USA never punishes women for consensual sex simply because it grates against the sensibilities of certain fundamentalist morons...", which is not a comparison between misdemeanor charges and stoning, but a statement that we have fundamentalist morons here too legislating their moral standards over folk who don't agree with them just like Iran does. It isn't the degree of severity of penalty that is relevant but the existence of the same moronic mentality here and there, the notion that religious motherfuckers know what is best for everybody and use force to apply their standards. Except that prostitution being illegal is not a religious thing. Look around the world, prostitution is banned in many places.

Look at liberal places like San Francisco, where they have tried and failed to legalize it.

The one place in the US where prostitution is legal (Nevada) is a VERY conservative state.
