Under Armour - how well does it really work?

Anyone actually own and wear the Under Armour cold gear stuff? I got a new job working in a freezer, would something like this be a good thing to wear(obviously not by itself, but as an undershirt/base layer), or is it all marketing hype? I don't want to drop $50 on a shirt before I hear some actual people opinions...

thanks 🙂

It's nothing too special. It's biggest asset is that it keeps me dry and doesn't chafe as much as having something else as my bottom layer.

And yes, all moisture-wicking undershirts are the same. I get mine here at the PX for $10 each.

What is the PX? I've been looking around, I don't see any other "Cold Gear" products from the other manufacturers.

Oops, sorry. It's Post eXchange...like on an Army base

we mountain bikers wear stuff from canari, velowear, descente, etc. that are equivalent to the under armour cold gear tights. the biking stuff usually has a padded chamois though, when i used to run track, nike dri-fits were pretty nice too.

I don't have access to any sort of Army Base.

Those biking tops heat up real quick on long runs 🙁

I've been told the extra padding is in case you bikers take a spill and need something to keep your skin from splitting

Yeah...sorry about that. I sometimes forget that not everyone has access to them 😱

But yeah, if you end up in a sporting goods store staring at Under Armour and an "off" brand, I can testify that performance has been the same for the gear I've used, regardless of brand.

LL Bean is your friend.

I searched for armour. Can you link me to the other thread? I'd like to read it for its opinions as well.

Little pricy, though.

If you have a Sam's club or a Costco, you can find some good stuff there for cheap. Also, your local ske shop will have a great selection of good stuff that's thin, and made for active wear.

The key to good thermal underware is the material. It MUST be synthetic or silk. Cotton or wool just wont do it. Also, thicker isn't always better.

I use under armorer for certain costumes in the plays I am in. it is very good, it keeps me cold on stage and warm when i am in the air conditioning!

Yeah, if anyone knows of a similar product which works just as well, for less money, that'd be cool too.

I have two underarmor tops (short & long sleeve) that I wear for baseball. Work like a dream, keeps me cool, dry, etc. I'm told the new Nike Pro stuff is also quite good, and seems to be cheaper.

I've been researching this all morning... I looked at the brand name ones, Nike Pro, UA, etc. The only ones that seem like they are geared for cold weather is UA's Cold Gear... I think Nike Pro is more of a keep cool thing. Unless all I'm seeing is the hype here, and it's all the same material... but the Nike stuff advertises like vents in the side and stuff.

The ones Amused link to are also more what I'm looking for...

I'm going to have to go somewhere and actually check the stuff out.

What are you expecting? It's great at wicking sweat away, and if you're in a freezer, that would be good. But if you're looking for insulation, get long johns.

I'm going to be an order picker... so I will always be moving, lifting. I want to be able to wear as little as possible, and still keep at a proper temperature while moving/lifting.

UnderArmor is great if you're going to be doing physical activity out in the cold, not sure how it would fare for just bumming around in a freezer. 😛 It would probably still keep you warm. However, you can pick up generic UA from Walmart for about $12. Being a college runner on a budget, that is what I use, and there is no discernable difference between it and UnderArmor to me. As has been stated, any wicking spandex base layers will do he same.

There will not be bumming around. It's a lot of physical work. I think I'm gonna go check out the UA and Nike Pro at the mall.. we'll see.

I'll probably buy UA cuz I;m a brand name whore.

In case anyone cares, I got a UA ColdGear long-sleeved mock shirt for $29 on clearance at Shenk & Tittle. If it works, I'll go back and get some more at this price.
