Long story short, friend's little sister nukes friend's 40-50 gig losslessly compressed self ripped music collection because she's a bitch. what's the best way for partial recovery? He already shut down and is now sleeping away the pain.

Unleashing the fvckin fury comes later, recovery now. Any ideas? NTFS harddrive, btw.

Any sort of data recovery program you can find, along with 40-50gb of free space on a different drive.

or..put new large hd and use easyrecoverypro...or something like that, and recover to the new hdd. remember it will take
forever and even after recovery he will have LOTS and TONS of work to do to rename them...etc...and even after all that
there is no guarantee the files are kosher.

If he self ripped it, he probably has the CD's and it'd be quicker/easier to re-rip it, unfortunately. Otherwise, utilities may be able to get back most of it--if you aren't still using the drive to write ANY data.

Complete guide to harddrive data recovery. Never done it myself. Guide.
But it looks informative, and I read it over just to be vaguely familiar with the process.

I used Restorer 2000 to fix my stuff, I think you can find it on cnet download but you have to buy it for it to recover more than a meg or something like that. It works great but you gotta have the equal amount of space on another partition or HD 'cause it places it on another partition. Also not full proof, I once did it after I downloaded some new stuff and it remixed all my mp3s into a jumble of different songs. It was funny :) Good luck

File Recovery

Remove hard drive, install as secondary in another functional machine. Install This software.

I've recovered files from physically bad hard drives and from formatted hard drives with this software, and it's free.
