Undeletable files... is this a virus?

Hey,

My friend is having problems with his computer... He somehow got these undeletable files on his desktop (probably from browsing too much kazaa or something heh). Anyway, these things cannot be renamed, cannot be deleted, and an error message appears when he tries to go into the image properties...

He runs win2k, if that means anything. He has yet to try and boot with a bootdisk and erase it through that command prompt (i hope he isn't in an NTFS format)...

Does anyone know what this is? I bet they're not even files, just some program running in the background or something... thanks

Could be a virus or even got cracked. Its hard to tell. Tell him to run an up to date antivirus scan.

Comrade Replicon,

Greetings from the peace-loving people of the socialist motherland.

Your friend's problem is clearly the work of counter-revolutionary wreckers and saboteurs under the direction of the British Foreign Office. I promise you, these scoundrels will be apprehended; Comrade Stalin is not a fool. In the meantime, I would have to ask why it would not be possible to remove the work of these swine by editing the Windows registry. There's a basis for these "files" there, is there not?

By the way, Comrade Replicon, how is it that your friend has become so lax as to be targeted in this way by enemies of the state. Perhaps he may be interested in explaining himself to us.

What are the names of the files? It might not be anything to worry about... they could just belong to a process that's in use.

Well, comrade, I have yet to see his computer, and I didn't want to send him off into the registry just yet. I'll see him in a couple of days or so.

As for the file names, they are not some temporary files. He tells me they have...erm... embarrsasing names :D. I thought it was kind of funny, but still, no good to have those on there. Anyway, I'll let you know if anything interesting comes from checking it out. thanks for the help.

Comrade Replicon,

So there are "embarassing" files on your friend's desktop? It is a good thing that we do not trust critical information to such fools. We have had a conversation with your friend's mother, comrade; as a matter of fact she is in custody at the moment. Believe me, she will be persuaded to tell us how those files got there. Of course, if he wishes to confess, we might deal with her more leniently. But I make no promises, comrade.

Were these files downloaded with IMesh? I have downloaded files that were defective and tried to delete them and Windows XP tells me that another program is using them and they cannot be deleted. I found out that I could copy them to another directory and then delete the original, so, I copied them to my CDRW and then deleted the originals and then threw away the burned disc. NO more problem!!!

Comrade Rebels7,

You may be interested to know, comrade Rebels7, that comrade Stalin has recently commented on what it means to have, as you say, "no problems". I quote him: "Death solves all problems; no man, no problems." Ha, ha, ha ... Comrade Stalin has a way with words, eh?

Ah, problem solved. The filenames were just long enough to be short enough to be files, but too long when you include the path... So shortening the length of a directory name allowed deletion of the files... One would expect windows to check for such obvious overflows... then again, no, one would NOT expect them to do that.
