I just got a new roommate (friends brother), and I've noticed something that I don't like. He puts raw meat in the freezer uncovered. Fish, ground beef, chicken, etc. He uses whatever he needs, then just puts the rest in the freezer.

I think it's nasty and I'm gonna ask him to make sure his shit is covered up, but does keeping it uncovered in the freezer cause any problems? I'm sure his stuff will just get freezerburn, but I don't want bacteria and shit growing inside the fridge and freezer.

Wow!!

That practice creates many hazards: Health, Social and emotional...

How disgusting. Tell him to stop or you'll start throwing it away.

Freezer burn is the biggest issue, even wrapped/freezer bagged meat will burn after awhile. Health issues could occur, especially with Beef Steak, if you eat it less than well done(don't do this). Chicken/Pork are usually cooked well enough to avoid issues.

That said, the roomie needs to cover that shit up. Even if the meat is fully cooked, the inside of the Freezer is potentially getting covered in nasty crap that will get on other things, even your hands.

That's nothing but speculation. If he touches the meat when he places it inside wrap, he's going to transfer any type of bacteria from the surface of the meat to the outer surface of the wrap with his hands. And, hopefully it's cold enough in the freezer that the vast majority of bacteria aren't multiplying.

That's why I used "potentially". The more it's done, the more likely it will happen though.

So let me get this correct....he leaves his meat uncovered in the freezer???
Does he walk around the house with his meat uncovered?

I also want to know if he foams at the mouth and asks "brains?" repeatedly in a monotone voice..

I just read up on cold storage and it look like there is nothing wrong with storing meat unwrap if the freezer/cold storage is keep clean and defrost/clean a couple of times yearly. However the food will lose flavors due to drying out, pick up odor from other foods, and freezer burn if not warp.
