Uncle's odd problem...

My uncle's computer refuses to read any media placed in the DVD-ROM or CD-R/RW drives.

If a cd or dvd is placed in either drive, the icon in Explorer changes to "CD Drive" and the icon shows the media type installed but the disk doesn't read. In the DVD-ROM drive, trying to examine the contents of the disk results in an error message asking that a disk be inserted, and in the CD-R/RW there are no errors, but it still shows nothing there (as if no disk were inserted).

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

It's a software problem, I'm pretty sure. It happened once before, and there doesn't seem to be anything in particular that causes it. A reformat fixed it last time, but he refuses to reformat this time. Last time I tried to research it, and I discovered that other people have had that problem, but I found no solutions for fixing it. I tried uninstalling the drives from device manager and allowing Windows to redetect them, but that didn't work.

His comp:

ASUS P4S8X-X
Pentium 4 1.6a
768MB DDR
GeForce 2 TI
DirectX 9.0c
ATi TV-Wonder
CD-R/RW Memorex 52x24x52
DVD-ROM Memorex 16x
WinXP Home (SP2)

check the system for spyware. I had a system on my bench where the optical drives behaved exactly that way. It was loaded up with spyware. cleaned it all out and ran a repair install with xp and that seemed to cure it.
