My uncles linksys router recently got struck by lightning. I bought it originally bundled as a package with this wireless adapter. If linksys doesnt replace the router and i have to buy a new one, probably a cheaper one considering that was a speedbooster one. I was wondering if i could buy a Dlink or Netgear router and have it recognize the wireless G adapter that he has left.

Also, do you think linksys will replace the router with the manufacturer warranty?

They should really start integrating a surge protection device into the power adapters like in laptops... :(

Just buy a WRT54G (non speedboost model). It's pretty cheap, about $40.

Doubt that Linksys will replace your router since it's not their fault.

Either I'm ignorant or something, but I didn't know that laptops had built in surge protectors?

well i might be confusing something, probably surge protector and backup power supply, when lightning hits and power goes out my laptop keeps running, I guess it just switches to battery or something.

but yea i might end up getting the non speed booster model, do you know how much it would affect speed wise?

while the router was still on my uncles 4Mbit cable connection it yielded 400+ across 20 feet and a couple of walls between.

Yeah, it automatically switches to battery when it's disconnected from the outlet.

Your uncle's wireless USB adapter doesn't have speedbooster anyway if it's the exact model you linked earlier. You need both devices to have speedbooster for it to work. You will not be able to tell the speed differnce when you're surfing the internet, because your internet is much slower than your wireless bandwidth.

Your internet = 4Mbps
Your wireless = 54Mbps (actual speeds ~12-16Mbps)

You can do warranty on models damaged by lightning. I worked at a computer store and we always did RMA for lightning/power surge damaged items. Email linksys and tell them the router died in a power surge, they'll probably ask you to check it a bit, then they'll give you an RMA number. Of course this is all assuming it's still under warranty.
