My uncle is in the ICU right now with a bleeding ulcer. I hope it isn't a full rupture and his stomach hasn't been perforated. :(, he is such a good person too.

Anyone know the mortality of a bleeding ulcer. :(
They say he threw up a lot of blood.

yes

if his blood count was too low, they may give him additional pints of blood. they will hopefully stop the bleeding as well. they will monitor his blood count as he is in the hospital.

if possible, they should do an endoscopy, and take biopsies of the stomach. this will determine whether the ulcers were caused by h. pylori, or maybe even a MALToma (MALT lymphoma)

they will likely put him on some proton pump inhibitor to regulate his acid...maybe protonix or nexium

does he have a history of indigestion? or ulcers?

From what my cousins have told me, no this is unexpected.

ulcers can be caused at anytime without warning, and it's mostly myth that stress or things you eat are what causes them.

the biopsies should tell what caused them

if he's in ICU, he should be in good hands for now...i'm sure their monitoring his blood count

that's good...i wish your uncle the best

my mother was in a similar situation. she was vomiting blood and went to the ER. she had bleeding ulcers, that the biopsies showed was caused by cancer (low grade MALT lymphoma).

she has just finished radiation treatments, and is doing much better now.

man, I had duodenal ulcers when I was around 12 until up to 17.

That was living hell. I could never lose weight because I always needed to have food in the stomach, or risk the onset of pain. I would drink bottles of pepto bismo to relieve the pain.
That was the most intense pain in the world, and often times, i'd feel it on my back. sometimes, i'd barf out dark, red, almost solidified blobs.

docs only gave me aggresive anti-acids, and they worked while i popped them in, but I did it frequently, so I was always in short supply.

I hope your uncle makes it through ok. ulcers aren't fun :(.

worst case scenario is death by exanguination. But i'm sure the surgeons will intervene before then. You uncle is in good hands.
