"Speaking to GamesTM, writer Josh Scherr and and lead designer Ricky Cambier said one of the upgrades the PS4 has enabled is much more detailed and flexible facial animation. For example, you’ll be able to move the camera around as Nate climbs and see him grimace with effort.

“We’ve completely revamped our facial animation systems. In The Last Of Us, the characters all had about 90 to 100 ‘bones’ in their faces. Think about that, about how detailed Joel and Ellie’s pained facial expressions were. Now, the faces have anywhere between 300 and 500 bones.”

“Think about that, about how detailed Joel and Ellie’s pained facial expressions were, how well the game captured the respective actors’ – Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson – seminal roles. All that was achieved on the old tech.

Naughty Dog hopes that increasing the level of fidelity and detail with allow players to empathize more with characters; it’s not just a “technical marvel”. Graphics-wise the developer is more concerned with setting moods than striving for photo-realism, and the power of the PS4 means the team can do a great deal more than ever before.

“On older games, some of the animations might have been sampled at 10 or 15 frames per second to save memory. That would have just been interpolated by our code [to run at 30 in-game],” Scherr said.

“While that looked fine, we can now afford to record it at 30 frames per second so that the animation looks that much smoother.”

*** Would have loved to see what they could have done if the console had hardware similar to a Core i5 4670K and a Titan X. (*PS5*)

1. 300-500 "bones?" Do they know anything about anatomy? Jeeeeeeeeeeeeez.
2. Not 1080p/60 FPS? Must be a terrible game.
3. Quality of visuals isn't linear, so I really don't care for the numerical comparisons. I'd rather see in-game footage and gameplay to determine visual quality.

1)That's just what they call the moveable structures in the face I guess.
2) joke is old man but they have 60fps 1080p footage of the engine out there.
3) I'd have to dig it up but they released 1080p gameplay from in-game game last year some time. I don't know if it was sort of a demo or some part of a level that would be in the actual game. Don't remember seeing that info.

Game looks good, just wish it were TLOU 2. I've played all the uncharted games and though playable all are eminently forgettable as well. Finish it, never think of it again.

I will play this anyway. I bet naughty dog applied a good bit from tlou in terms of gameplay. The video mentioned above (youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow2cL-pp6p8) looks pretty nice.

A bone is essentially an invisible object that is mapped to a set of polygons. Each subtle facial feature in real life would require a "bone" to replicate accurately in cgi.

5x more expressive. Never knew there was a numeric system for rating facial expressions :)
