<< thats a pretty old provider you have that still caps at the modem...u'll violate TOS like what the rest of the people say. if the modem is rented, you'll owe them a modem when they kill ur acct and so on so forth. >>

RIght....most cable providers now limit bandwidth on the gateway end, not the hardware end. The way they can tell if a modem is upcapped is they look at a monitor. If your modem is uncapped, you'll saturate the gateway anytime you download from a high speed provider. Your line on the graph truely does "stick out like a sore thumb", and they'll be able to detect it within a matter of hours (maybe a day).

Anyway, like I said, most cable providers regulate the bandwith internally now. I suprised there's still some hardware managed providers out there.

<< If I could uncap my cable modem, I would have done it by now. The only way to boost my painfully slow speeds (1000 down/128 up) is to break into the cable company's "account server" and update my account settings. And yes, 1000/128 is ridiculous because I had 3000+/1000+ when @Home was still alive and kicking. Comcrap throttled us back hard...and increased the monthly charge to boot. >>

When you have an upload speed that high, people start putting up servers. Servers are BBBAAAAADDDDD. Broadband providers HATE servers. That's why most BB providers limit you to 128-384K. If you think 1000/128 is slow, use a modem for a month. Talk about taking things for granted!

<< You could have 4 people playing CS and another person downloading at 200k fairly easily on a normal cable modem. AFAIK uncapping a cable modem is impossible. Most of the programs that say they will do it are fake. If in theory you were able to do it, it would not be illegal, but it would violate the TOS of your account and they would kick you off.

Cable uncapping was possible back when cable modems were brand new, but with the newer DOCSIS modems it's not possible. I would guess you guys were just on at a good time.

Guess again, girly man. :)D I've always wanted to say that :D)

I've worked for three major cable ISP's, and all three of them capped the connection via the modem's bootfile that gets downloaded when the modem sync's with the network. You power cycle the modem, it re-downloads the bootfile. If you know how to get into the modem's configuration and find out how to change the bootfile, you can uncap your modem.

I'd like to say it's that plain and simple, but it's really quite complex.

Good luck...

The way to learn how is to go directly to the source. Call your cable company and ask them... I'm sure they'd love to help out...

Yea, well, um, having a server was rather nice when I had a 1Mbps upstream pipe. But my biggest gripe is the fact that when I upload now, I can't download at the same time...it's not even just a little slower, it's almost zero throughput. All those ACKs for the upload transfer just saturate the line and send the downstream to a grinding halt. At least when the upstream was 1Mbps, I had plenty of slack.

If I had the choice of 1000/1000 or 3000/128, I'd definitely pick the former.

Could two cable modems be hooked together to increase bandwidth? Or do cable companies not install multiple modems at one location?

<-- talked to a gentleman with four modems in one house -each connected to different computers. It was quite a big house and he apparently wanted it set up that way. Hey, if he's gonna pay that much... who's gonna turn him down, right?

LOL! Well I feel like an ass, but only because of this:

<< Modems that probably don't work:
RCA DCM235
3Com CMX (USR)
>>

Unfortunately I have the RCA :(
I guess I was mistaken on the uncapability of cable modems, I was under the impression that they were limited at the gateway itself. Live and learn I guess :)
Thanks for the info, I'm off to check my friends brands of cable modems ;)

But would that increase bandwidth if I had just one PC?
