Hey all...

Something weird happened to me today

To see what visual quality I could expect from the GF 6800 I'm thinking about buying, I fired up UT2004, and maxed every visual detail, with the resolution at 1280x1024. Expecting a pretty slideshow, I loaded DM Antalus and was shocked to find that my 9600 was actually clipping...i didnt enable vsync, figuring I would get framerates in the teens. I could tell, however, that I was way above 60 for the whole time. The only slowdown came on the big onslaught levels, maybe dipping to around 25 ( i was going by the feel of the game...boo to UT for having a usless framerate display). Still not bad for a card that is less than half as fast as a 9800.

This was the first time I had ever been pleasantly surpurised by my poor little 9600.

Anyway, the game looked amazing, and I can't wait to crank up AA and AF with a 66 or 6800

Weird, eh?

DM and ONS have huge framerate differentials. I'm not surprised that you were getting 60+ in DM. :)

What flavour of 9600? SE, NP, Pro, XT? That makes a big difference.

That wouldn't happen to be one of the 8200/8250 RDRAM-equipped Dells, would it? If so, those are quite competent.

Not really... UT2k4 doesn't seem to use very many "advanced graphical features" so it should run fine using high video settings, even on archaic video cards. CPU-limited and all that jazz.

It's a straight 9600 non pro

I missed the change in the Dell line by a few months...I have one of the last 4550's they made, before the mid tower design was renumbered. Pretty quick still.

Well it depends on what sort of map you're playing. As M4H mentioned, most (all?) of the DM maps should be a walk in the park for most decent cards -- Onslaught, OTOH, might be tough on the lower end cards.

I have a P4 2.53, 1 GB RAM, 9500 Pro... ONS can be a freakin' slideshow at times. DM is very smooth though. Also, Assault is pretty intensive, and framerates are pretty low. I run at 1152x864 resolution.
