I have the AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual-core processor (Orleans) -- ECS C51GM-M motherboard combo. (retail)

This motherboard accommodates two 240-pin unbuffered DDR2 SDRAM modules. In can support DDR2 800/667/533/400 memory types and it's total maximum memory size is 16 GB.

The OCZ PC2-4200EB reviewed by AnandTech's Wesley Fink on December 21st, 2004 seemed to be the best it could get, [then.]

Obviously, said review, being light years ago, is there something better [now] that I should be considering?

I don't do much gaming. However, I do run many, memory intensive, programs.

Being less experienced with 64 bit technology, my hopes are based on some others here that can reference some good choices for me to consider. (gamers know there stuff) :D

No worries for budget. As always, "bang for the buck." Thank you.

The MadShrimps site, which does a lot of hardware testing, has an article that discusses how the memory needs for Conroe and AMD processors differ in their memory requirements.

This article has useful comments for both the Conroe and AMD users.

Mad Shrimps article is here.

So does Core 2 need high speed memory to shine? The answer is a resounding no! This is different from AMD AM2 where more expensive memory is needed to get the most out of the system.

Why is PC6400, which is also running asynchronous, faster then? Because the memory speed is now that much higher that it compensates for the loss of running asynchronous and overall performance does increase.

Well, this is all well and good info. for people in the know. Having the ability to process said info is another matter considering my computer as well as (DDR2) illiteracy.

Bump;

C'mon guys I need your help.

Sons computer is leaving for college Monday. I haven't another to use. Memory is all I need left to purchase. Today! Hopefully.

My ECS user guide says the following (below) have been tested and qualified for use with my C51GM-M motherboard.

Numbers below again are for, 1 GB.....I'd like 2 GB -- Thoughts?

Chipset: nVIDIA® GeForce 6100 & nForce 410 built in graphics.

Infineon - HYB18T256 800AF25.

Kingston - KHX6400D2

SyncMAX - R050075B

Unbuffered DIMM support for AM2 CPU

DDR2-800 DIMM2 = any

Timing mode = 2T

Address timing control register = 0020_252oh

Output driver compensation control register = X011_3222H
