he ran in the 36 Olympics, got caught by the Gestapo stealing a nazi flag (they let him keep it. ran the mile at USC, joined the army air corps and became a bombardier. flew missions in the south pacific, plane crashed due to engine failure, he and the pilot drifted for 44 days and 2,000 miles in a two man raft until the Japanese captured them and he spent 3 years in POW camps. how this guy and guys like him lived through that is truly amazing. one particular guard beat him nearly every day. he also ran the final leg of the Olympic torch in Nagno.

I highly recommend reading the book. i really enjoyed it.
