Unbelievably Frustrating Router Question

We were recently forced to switch routers by Frontier. I always had it set up so the router/modem combo they gave us functioned as just a modem, and we used a third part router for the actual wireless signal. With this new router (Westell 7500) I can not for the life of me get that to work. I have googled till I'm blue in the face and can't get it to work. Multiple things have led me to the "set the router to Bridge mode" conclusion, but when I do that and set everything back up, I still have no internet connectivity. It works find if I want to use the Westell for a hard connection and a router, but the minute i try and use it as just the modem, I lose the hard connection and have no wireless through my router. The router I'm using is a D-link DIR-655. Please help, as I'm about to throw this Westell piece of garbage through a window. Thanks!

On Verizon's network, you need to release the DHCP address prior to bridging the modem, or the device that you're bridging to won't be able to obtain a new DHCP lease until the old lease expires, which can take a few hours.

Frontier's taken over operations for a large part of Verizon's wired network, so I wouldn't be surprised if they inherited Verizon's network management procedures.

On Comcast with a Motorola SBG900 combo unit all I had to do was turn off NAT and turn off wireless. Not sure if that is helpful for your situation.
