I got an email from my dad today - he had mailed McAfee technical support the following mail regarding mails from "microsoft support" with attachments. Here is his mail (I assume it is from a webform)
From: (xxxxxxxxxxx@free.fr)
Sent: Jan 10, 2004 3:30:26 PM
Subject: Is this a genuine Microsoft mail?

Description: I have now received three times the following mail:

Title: Use this patch immediately !
Sender: security@microsoft.com
Body: Dear friend , use this Internet Explorer patch now!
There are dangerous virus in the Internet now!
More than 500.000 already infected!

Attachments: There is a txt file attached McAfee EmailScanReport.txt
which I have not opened, and an executable file which I have not touched.

Please advise if this is genuine. If so I am surprised to receive
updates from Microsoft in this way.

Here is the reply he got from McAfee technical support:

I hope he didn't apply the "patch" from the email. I just can't believe that a reputable company such as McAfee would be spreading such incorrect information

Hector needs to learn English too. Does McAfee outsource all their support to foreign countries to save money?

AAHAHHA!

Oh that was great. At my job, I get about 20 of those every hour. Delete each one....it's so funny. :p

Send in a nice complaint e-mail to customer support with the e-mails including headers and the Microsoft website.

Demand compensation. :)

Norton seems pretty decent...I sent them an executable with a virus that NAV didn't detect and they replied within a couple hours stating that the next definitions update would have the fix but in the meantime here's a set of beta definitions that already has it.

NAI/McAfee enterprise support is good. :p They normally know their products well. I feel sorry for people that have to use consumer support.
