As some of you know, I work at a very large dealership. One of our guys got called up to active duty, so I've been filling in for him on our night shift 1-10pm since May.
This lady calls tonight, wants to know if we can make her a key for a 1998 Escort, and how much would it be. I give her prices for both a PATS key (has a chip) and a regular key. She says she has an animal (didn't say what) locked in the car.
So I, being a huge animal lover, tell her it'd be a lot quicker to call a tow truck to get the door open. But no, she's thinking about leaving the car and coming to get a key from us. So I tell her, for us to cut you a key from the VIN, we need ID, proof of ownership, and obviously, the VIN. That is our (and should be every dealer's) policy, or anybody could bring us a VIN to anybody's car and get a key.
She starts FREAKING, yelling, cussing, complete temper tantrum. Totally out of control. "why would I be acting like this if I didn't really own the car, etc, etc". Then her mom gets on the phone and I tell her about getting the tow truck, and she agreed and hung up, all the while the chick is screaming in the background, "just hang the goddamn phone up".
Then she calls right back and my coworker answered and she called him every name in the book and hung up.
The whole while I'm thinking, this sounds like some ex-wife or GF wanting a key to her ex's vehicle.

Next guy brings in a Focus for its first oil change, 3,000 miles on the car. Says, "oh, and the front wheels have turned brown, like the paint's bad, is that under warranty?"
I look at the car, and it's just brake dust. I tell the guy, and he says, no I've run it through the car wash and washed it myself. I say you have to SCRUB the wheels. I have, he says and gets pissy about it.
I say, ok, I'll note that on the write up sheet. Then I go out to get info off the car.......the damn dust wiped right off with no effort at all with my finger.
What a lying sack of shit......and has the nerve to get pissed about it.

How do people like this get through life?

Because the idea that the customer is always right has been engrained into their heads.

I'm thinking it should be changed to "the customer is right stupid"

(wistful sigh) If only the blackout had lasted 2 weeks instead of 2 days....natural selection would have weened these morons out.

Don't even get me started about the guy who came in and cussed the whole dealership out, including the sales department over us not warranting a tire that had 14 FREAKING NAILS IN IT.

I kid you not. 14 nails and he was pissed that we wouldn't give him a new one.

rofl, what an idiot :) Some warranties do cover that, but it has to be be explicitly stated though.

Not to rag on Fords exactly, but what the hell kind of pads do they put on at the factory?

Every new Expedition I have seen has the front wheels absolutely black with brake dust. I swear that since they came out, I have only seen about 3 of them with clean front wheels.

I think that'll be my favorite phrase for the next couple of weeks.

And they were probably just washed. The '03 Expeditions have a huge problem with brake dust. There is no satisfactory fix from Ford right now, though some people have cured it by using aftermarket pads.
The dude's Focus is a different story. 3k miles and he's never scrubbed the wheels.

I figured it was relatively isolated to the Expedition, since I havent noticed it to that degree on any other Ford products. If I owned one I would be more than a little pissed that I couldnt drive down the street after washing my car before the front wheels needed to be washed again.

Look at it this way: if every person out there was a car expert, you'd probably be out of job. It just goes with a territory.

I don't expect them to be experts, but a little common sense and not lying would be nice.

That's another thing we can take up with God. Stupidity should be painful. That'd fix a LOT of things around here.

My idea of customer service is to start out nice, but treat the customer as nice as they treat you. I do not need customers that yell at me. They can take their business somewhere else.

That would work only in ideal worlds, example - you own the company. But if you work for someone else, there's not much choice but either put up or quit.

Unfortunately, stupidity is painful mostly to other people, not the stupid ones. They don't know the difference.

There are dishonest people in this world.

Sorry, but it's a reality that we all must face. There is always a certain part of the population that will attempt to get something for nothing, or take advantage of you or your employer or the business' policies or whatever.

They're not necessarily stupid; they're selfish. (Interestingly, a thread about exchanging a motorcycle helmet in this forum illustrates the other side of the counter.)

Learn that this is real life and this is going to happen.

Yes, these people are unpleasant, and yes, they can be unreasonable, but that's what happens in customer service.

I applaud you for the manner in which you handled these customers.

To answer your question, people like this get through life because many of them actually ARE very smart, and learn to take advantage of others to their personal gain.

The guy told you the wheels on his Focus are painted? I haven't seen crap like that since, well, Monday I guess. But still! Did you say anything to him after you wiped the dust off? I don't think I could have resisted rubbing it in is face. Come to think of it, doing that LITERALLY would have been extremely satisfying.

Did you tell him he's way too stupid to use Linux ?

You should have told him:
I'm sorry, but the internet is part of Windows.

My friend is a mechanic at a Lexus dealership and he told me a whopper a while back.

Some dude brought in his RX300 and said his engine was giving him problems. When they check it out, the engine is basically destroyed. The dude never changed his oil in 50K miles. He was told he needed a new engine. Instead of taking the fall because of his own stupidity, he sues my friend's dealership and you know what? He won so they had to put in a new engine for him. My friend couldn't believe it.
