At Good Guys in Riverside, CA, there is a AT&T deal which includes...
-1000 Anytime minutes
-Unlimited Nights and weekends
-Free Nationwide roaming
-Free Nationwide long distance
-Free unlimited incoming text msg
-Free mMode for 1st month
I got this last week, which was perfect because my girlfriend went to Washington D.C.. I have been looking for a free nationwide roaming plan for a while and the only one close to 1000 anytime minutes was like 600. I also added a share line, which allows me to share the 1000 anytime minutes between the two phones and got 1000 mobile to mobile minutes.
I got the Nokia 6800 for free after rebate but I think the rebate might have expired.

This is a southern california promo only.

Unfortunately their southern cali GSM service is not very good (from what I've read) but if you can get this on tdma it's a good deal.

Well.

If you dont like it.. try the local plans.
You can roam on any available carrier (Where they have agreements) within ur home calling area and you wont be charged for it:D..but ONLY on the local plan.
I am on Cingular all the time as Cingular has a better signal at my campus:D

AFAIK this a local plan that means you have to pay for roaming (in California market, at least). I wouldn't get AT&T GSM even it's $5/mo as they still have a long way to go in terms of coverage.

Like the other thread mention, T-mobile is offering the exact same thing for the same price. Plus, their TMO's GPRS service has a more reasonable pricing. Even AT&T uses the 850 band, the coverage can't even come close to what TMO is offering across the US.

A local plan means no roaming charges in your home area, in this case that means california, parts of nevada like reno and las vegas.

As far as coverage is concerned, it's impossible to rate any one carrier as having the best coverage, it's all relative. Carrier A may have the best coverage in city X but they may suck in city Y.

As an example, t-mo and cingular suck in the san francisco bay area where as at&t's gsm coverage is better (not as good as their tdma coverage but pretty close) but in southern cali it might be the opposite. And even then certain areas in the bay area may be better covered my t-mo or cingular.

The only thing I can say is that at least at&t gives you a 30 trial period.

avoid ATT GSM like the plague, it sucks badly here in SD (my friend couldn't get calls in most locations, he simply stopped using it, fighting with them to cancel his contract, they wouldn't budge and sent him to collections)

my previous ATT non-GSM (contract ended in August) was great

Yes AT&T GSM sucks big time but it'll get better soon. Had it for a year and it was kinda bad should of stayed TDMA. Right now I went Cingular for their family share plan and will be switching back or to either T-mobile or Verizon as soon as contract ends. My first CS call was really insulting and except for the great coverage I get the cons kinda suck. IE no free incoming text mesaging, not even a few for those stupid text messaging telemarketers. No way of accessing VM but thru yor phone wasting minutes. Oh, customer service is only there for limited amount of hours not 24 hours like every one else. Oh and finally you get horrible service when you do connect to someone :frown:

Did you see at&t's new share plans! The old tdma share plan for 3 lines used to be $80 it's now $60!

I went in and was talking to the guy about this plan on the gsm network and he told me not to get it because the gsm network was horrible. I mean, if the guy who's selling it tells me not to get it, it must be bad. I have AT&T already, and I always have service pretty much everywhere in california that i go.

Cingular better? First time I heard that. Might just be CA though. :D

I got in on this deal on 9-26, but combined it with AT&T web promotion of free phones (got the Sony Ericsson T616 free )

In talking to AT&T types this(in store and over the phone) 1000 anytime deal for the LA region will end on October 1. A manager at a local store explained that it was a goof by corporate, this was confirmed by a CSR on the 1-800 lines, (stated its was the best deal they've seen by AT&T since the $99 unlimited deal when GSM was rolled out)

Plus if you work for a large company, ask your HR department it they have a AT&T wireless "foundation access number" or FAN this will get you a discount on top of the great LA area deal if you ask to attached this code to your billing. I got a additional 15% off.

As for coverage in the areas I travel and live in So Cal, (Orange County, Palm Springs, San Gabriel Valley) GSM is better than my old digital TDMA. My wife has a GSM phone and she gets better service with both our phones side by side.

It is FREE NATIONWIDE ROAMING like I said...if you don't believe me i''ll e-mail you thepromo.
GSM in general, not just AT&T GSM service, sucks in the united states. It works great in europe and asia, which probably means it'll be as good in the states in the future. I've had Pac Bell/Cingular GSM service for almost 7 years before i just switched and AT&T is better than Cingular, at least in my area.

I really have been happy w/ AT&T for the past few years but this GSM service is getting on my last nerve. I drop more calls. Last month AT&T credited me for 26 dropped calls and I know there were more than that. My dad is thinking of moving to GSM and I stongly urged him not to do it... at least w/ AT&T.

On top of the bad service area (in NYC and Pittsburgh, I recently moved), AT&T royally screwed up my bill by dumping all of my calls into peak minutes. I opened my bill and saw $513 and almost $hit myself. One and a half hours of explaining that August 21st was a Sunday and should have gone to nights and weekends, plus all of the mobile-to-mobile minutes (483 & 627 on my last 2 bills before this one)... I'm really getting tired of the issues. AT&T better get their $hit together or I'll be the next guy going to Verizon.

Speaking of Verizon (and while I'm ranting about cell phones), why do they need to instruct you how to leave a voicemail every time you call someone. I'd think by now most people know how to do it. Add up all those wasted 10second intervals on top of the personalized message that I have used in my life wating for the beep and I could have about 6 months of my life back.

Thats my 2 centsl, I expect change.

All the cellular phone companies are going to start releasing killer deals next month, since you starting in November you're gonna be able to keep your cell phone number and switch to any company you want. They're going to try and get people on contracts.

Well....seems like there's a lot of AT&T bashers in here. In my experience, I have had excellent coverage, and very rarely (if ever) drop calls. It is much better than SprintPCS and T-Mobile in my own experience. I'm located in Cleveland, OH, but travel all over the country for work and have never had a problem at all with GSM service. I would recommend it highly over any provider.
