Chipper Jones batting in the 7th, two Braves on base, 1st and 2nd
shortstop catches a line drive, steps on 2nd to put out the guy that was on 2nd base and then tags the runner coming into 2nd from first base

Cool. Most triple plays involve huge screw ups. Best one I've seen/remember was done by Kelly Gruber (Toronto) about 15 years ago. Awesome tag, too bad it was only ruled a double play:(.

So the best one that you saw didn't exist? If it was only ruled a double play, then it wasn't an unassisted triple play, regardless of what actually happened.

The umpire botched the call. The tag was made to get the triple play but the umpire completly missed it. The next day the Toronto Sun had on the front page the glove and ball clearly touching the player while Gruber was in midair.

I love things like this in Baseball. An ordinary triple play is rare enough, but an unassisted one means a couple of things MUST happen before the ball even hits the bat. Nice play and a great way to get your name in the history of a sport.

It's only happened like 14 times in the history of MLB. Realistically, it's cool, but it doesn't take any skill. The SS yesterday just grabbed the ball, stepped on the bag, and tagged the guy. Took all of about 3 steps and 2 seconds.

And like I said above, a couple of things need to happen before the ball is even hit, so luck absolutely comes into play with something like this. However, you still need to be in the right place and execute 3 outs rather quickly. So yes there's a fair amount of luck involved, but you still need to think out what to do and actually do it on the fly. I don't think you can even practice for this type of play, so if you're lucky enough to be in the position to turn it you kinda have to think things through even though it looks so simple. This guy even threw to 1st base at the end because he wasn't sure he had all 3 outs.

Why was the runner on first going all the way to second? Was it a hit and run play or just a screwup? From the wiki it makes it sound like it only happens when the hit and run is on, so, assume it was that csae.

yes, the guy on first has be going on the pitch or else he'll get back to first when the ball it caught, so it has to be a hit and run, or else the guy on first would have to screw up at just the wrong time
