Los Angeles Police Department officials described the shooting death of a 19-year-old man after a bizarre high-speed chase on the 101 Freeway "tragic" but defended the officers' actions.

Eight Los Angeles police officers fired more than 90 rounds, killing him.

LAPD officials will review several factors related to the incident, including communication tactics and whether the large number of rounds fired endangered other freeway motorists.

When asked if this may have been a case of suicide by cop, LAPD Lt. Andy Neiman said, "It's certainly bizarre behavior, and it ended in a tragic situation for all involved."

Police said they noticed Abdul Arian driving erratically near the Northridge Fashion Center on Wednesday and tried to pull him over. But he refused, instead taking them on a high-speed pursuit through city streets before pulling onto the Ventura Freeway.

He drove a black Crown Victoria, which his uncle said was a retired police cruiser that had been purchased at an auction.

During the chase, Arian called 911, and according to a partial transcript of the call released by the LAPD, he claimed to have a gun and made threats to the police.

"I have been arrested before for possession of destructive devices, I'm not afraid of the cops," he told the dispatcher. "If they pull their guns, I'm going to have to pull my gun out on them."

The dispatcher, according to the release, pleaded for Arian to surrender, saying "I don't want you to hurt yourself."

Arian responded with expletives and warned that the police are "going to get hurt."

Police did not recover a gun from the scene.

After cutting across lanes, Arian stopped, jumped out of his car and began running on the freeway. Facing police while back-stepping, he extended both arms with clasped hands, a gesture captured on video by a KTLA-TV news helicopter.

But as Arian headed toward the shoulder of the freeway in the vicinity of a vehicle that had pulled over, he turned again and assumed what police called a "shooting stance." He appeared to wield a weapon. His uncle believed it was a cellphone. Sources familiar with the investigation who were not authorized to speak publicly confirmed that it was a cellphone.

well, he claimed to have a weapon and assumed a shooting stance with his cell phone so...

you are missing the key word "at" in your title. the article doesn't mention him being muslim either and has no bearing on the story.

I live in LA County and saw the TV broadcast on KTLA. It looked to me like he had a gun and two times pointed it in a manner that looked like he was about to take shots at the police.

He ran from his car all the time pointing an object at the cops and then ran to another car. He then ran out from behind that car and put his hands up in a shooting position like the article describes.

Since I now know he had no weapon I would say suicide by cop is accurate. He had to know that the gestures he was making would result in the police firing at him.

hah, "shot at" 90 times. maybe got hit 4 or 5 times in all of that. . . . police are notorious for being poor shots

I don't expect the police to risk their lives in these circumstances. The kid clearly wanted to die (assuming the reported facts are accurate). It's unfortunate that he chose to involve other people in his suicide, I can't imagine the psychological impact of killing someone.

They shut up the driver who saw it all happen? Or did they shoot him too while they were at it?

With it being night time, you couldn't really tell what would have been going on anyway.

reported for misleading thread title. Being a muslim if he is one is not relevant.

Shooting someone 90 times is somewhat overkill, over police reaction may be an issue, but blaming any given religion for a for an idiot's behavior that made such an outcome likely is the thing worth pointing out.

Such a idiots driving at extreme speed and refusing to stop, greatly endangers the general public. Maybe we can argue police egged him on and maybe the police should of stopped pursuit in the interest of public safety, but the religion of the perp has nothing to do with such police decisions. As the whole incident could have resulted in the deaths of many innocent motorists sharing the same road if the perp crashed into them.

The only problem I see here is that 8 cops each fired at least 11.25 rounds. Seriously?

lol 90 times? I heard of shooting a couple extra shots just to make sure, but 90? Really?

He probably deserved to be arrested and all, but this seems a tad too far imo.

I believe they have extended magazines, so emptying one in heat is not a stretch. You'll be surprised how fast you can empty a magazine.
