Legal experts: DOJ’s Zimmerman tip line merely gives impression that agency is acting

11:09 PM 07/21/2013, by Chuck Ross

A range of legal experts think that the Department of Justice’s attempts to collect information from the public on George Zimmerman is a way to pass responsibility for investigating the man onto the public, as well as to give the impression that the agency is acting.

After a jury found Zimmerman not guilty of murdering Trayvon Martin, Attorney General Eric Holder said in a speech last Monday that the DOJ would conduct an investigation into whether or not the shooting was racially-motivated. Zimmerman is half-Hispanic and half-white. Martin was black.

Zimmerman’s defense team addressed that investigation in a Friday statement.

“We are confident [the Department of Justice] will find a young man with a diverse ethnic and racial background who is not a racist,” Zimmerman’s lawyers wrote, “a man who is, in fact, sensitive to the complex racial history of our country.”

Trayvon Martin: Did protesters miss Obama's point?

By Hal Boedeker, Staff writer

UPDATED : President Barack Obama's comments about race and Trayvon Martin continued to reverberate on Sunday morning chat shows.

One point stood out in the discussions. Obama seemed to be lowering expectations about a Department of Justice investigation against George Zimmerman, agreed David Gregory of NBC's "Meet the Press" and Candy Crowley of CNN's "State of the Union."

On "Meet the Press," Charles Ogletree, a professor at Harvard Law School, said it was a state issue, not a federal one.

On the same program, PBS host Tavis Smiley applauded protesters who honored Trayvon but said they missed the point. Obama basically said the Department of Justice investigation "ain't going no further," Smiley said.

Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League, countered that people make a mistake in prejudging such investigations.

After Trayvon, where's outrage over black-on-black violence?

On the last day of the annual NAACP convention last week, the Rev. Al Sharpton stepped to the mic.

"We cannot have our sons' and daughters' lives on the line for anybody who wants to pursue them, follow them and kill them — and say it's in self-defense."

Sharpton — alluding to George Zimmerman's recent acquittal in the Trayvon Martin shooting — was preaching to the choir.

And much of America became an amen corner. Media talking heads gnashed their teeth. Los Angeles protesters lugged signs that suggested black males are one endangered species that can be hunted with impunity. And more than 1 million names filled an NAACP petition imploring the feds to slap Zimmerman with a civil-rights suit.

On the other hand, Rev. Sharpton … What about the sons and daughters who regularly are killed in drive-bys in bullet-riddled urban America?

I considered the outsized focus on the Trayvon tragedy in light of a troubling slate of NAACP workshops.

Several sessions targeted urban gun violence. Specifically, gun-related homicides, which one session's summary noted was the "leading cause of death among African-American teens ages 15 to 19 in 2008 and 2009."

While U.S. gun homicides in 2010 plunged 49 percent from its high in 1993, blacks disproportionately remain victims of gun violence (55 percent in 2010, despite making up only 13 percent of the population), according to the Pew Research Center's Social & Demographic Trends project.

Yet, somehow, the urgency of this deadly epidemic was obscured in Trayvon's blinding glare.

I almost replied to RD. Everybody, I implore you to stop bashing your head against a concrete wall and refrain as well. haha

I'm thinking reasonable doubt might be either Anand's alt or a forum house account to keep hits going. He's clearly just trolling.

Where is the reasonable doubt? George Zimmerman obviously stalked and killed a kid that was just trying to get home!

Rachel Jeantel's testimony is key to this case if you ask me. It was ignored by the jurors and is being ignored by many in this thread.

Again:

What Racheal Jeantel testified to under oath was:

Trayvon Martin: "What are you following me for?"

George Zimmerman: "What are you doing around here?"

Trayvon Martin: "Get off! Get off!"

Do I need to say more? Trayvon was obviously fighting for his life against a "creepy" stranger that profiled him and stalked him all the way home.

You are confusing "reasonable" with "unreasonable."

That goes for many of the GZ side of the house.

As long as the TM group was twisting/ignoring facts; they were being held accountable for such.

Notice that a new crop of TM supporters have tried to fill the void of the veterans.

As long as the facts are ignored and whining goes on that the jury failed; people will willingly point out the facts.

TM was not on trial; only his actions for a period of 4-5 minutes.
The state was unable to demonstrate beyond a reasonable doubt that Zimmerman could be held to the standard required by manslaughter.

And all the protests are because a black teen was killed and the protestors refuse to look at the facts; just the outcome which was tainted by the media.

Holy crap! Sometimes we get caught up in the Zimmermans of the world and forget that there is true evil about.

All of the evidence supports that Zimmerman was not the aggressor.

1. No fighting injuries to Trayvon. Significant injuries to Zimmerman. Abrasions from punching on Trayvon's hand. None on Zimmerman.

2. A very certain and credible eyewitness who saw Trayvon pinning down Zimmerman and beating him "MMA style" while Zimmerman screamed for help.

3. Grass stains on Zimmerman's back but on Trayvon's knees. Trayvon was never on the bottom.

4. Rachel Jeantel testified that Trayvon caused Zimmerman to lose track of him. She also said he made it "by his daddy's house." He's safe at this point, so why does he go out and confront Zimmerman? We know Trayvon confronts Zimmerman that 2nd and fatal time because Zimmerman didn't know where Trayvon was, but Trayvon still knew where Zimmerman was, according to Jeantel. Why else would he go confront him other than to fight him?
I don't think we know that Martin confronted Zimmerman. It's possible, but he had run once indicating a desire to not engage. I put no stock in anything Honey Dee Dee says since she's a perjurer who changes her story more often than her underwear, and I believe Zimmerman's own testimony was that Martin said "You found me". I think it's more likely that either they blundered into one another, or that Martin hid in a spot that had concealment when Zimmerman walked past but not when he walked back.

Don't they learn how to hit using punching bags and such? You don't need to spar to learn how to punch. Instruction on a bag could be enough.

You never had a fight?

Plus who knows if really had any fights or was just grandstanding. He just turned 17 do you really think he had any meaningful fights if he had any at all?
For the bold, a less dense person could form a reasonable conclusion from your bolded statement, Martin's total lack of wounds other than the single gunshot that killed him, and Zimmerman's total lack of wounds to his hands. This might be the time to go for some personal growth rather than trying to warp the facts into a story that fits your own prejudice.

For your last paragraph, most people are pretty much done with fighting at 17; we've had about all the fights that we are going to have as we've matured. We have ample evidence that Martin had a lot of experience in fighting - not training, but actual fighting. Ignore it if you wish.

Here's what Romany Malco has to say about the case.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/romany-malco/a-message-to-trayvon-mart_b_3612231.html

A Message to Trayvon Martin Sympathizers

I haven't touched on the Trayvon Martin issue because race matters in this country are the paralysis of the American people. To constructively discuss Trayvon would require empathy, introspection and an understanding of America's social and economic history. This is why the open forums we have seen thus far seem to fuel more ignorance and bias than reasonable debate.

To be brutally honest, the only reason people are even aware of Trayvon Martin is because it became a topic within mainstream news and pop culture. Meaning: News directors saw it as a profitable, sensational story. Hundreds of blacks die annually in South Side Chicago without even a blurb. Trayvon isn't in the mainstream news for any reason other than ratings and profit. The news coverage on the Zimmerman case almost implies that the killing of this young black man is somehow an anomaly and I resent that.

In this country, if it isn't streamlined through mainstream media and pop culture, it doesn't seem to warrant national debate. Our "government" continues to wreak havoc on our civil liberties and there is little to no protest from the black community because of media diversion tactics that keep such pertinent issues out of mainstream media. But if Jay-Z or Rihanna were to make mention of it, we'd suddenly be jolted out of our sugar comas and protesting on freeways.

My point being, people are up in arms about Trayvon based on regurgitated pundits and manipulated facts aired to elicit emotion while fueling America's anger and division. That's how you boost ratings. No different from Piers Morgan's desperate rant over gun control when he knew his ratings were in the dumps. And from where I stand, anyone who still relies on corporate-owned media pundits to support an argument isn't equipped to offer worthwhile solutions.

People are using Trayvon Martin's death as an excuse to project their own deep-seated issues with racism and will not be capable of intelligent, empathetic debate until they've cooled down and afforded themselves an education.

Addressing Trayvon without first addressing the absence of critical thinking in our schools, the lack of introspection, the reasons for our low tolerance and our country's skewed value system does nothing more than create a sounding board for the ignorant. So rather than facilitate more racism outcry, I'd like to address young black people specifically.

I believe we lost that trial for Trayvon long before he was killed. Trayvon was doomed the moment ignorance became synonymous with young black America . We lost that case by using media outlets (music, movies, social media, etc.) as vehicles to perpetuate the same negative images and social issues that destroyed the black community in the first place. When we went on record glorifying violent crime and when we voted for a president we never thought to hold accountable. When we signed on to do reality shows that fed into the media's stereotypes of black men, we ingrained an image of Trayvon Martin so overwhelming that who he actually may have been didn't matter anymore.

Don't you find it peculiar that the same media outlets who have worked so diligently to galvanize the negative stigmas of black men in America are now airing open debates on improving the image of black males in American media? Do you honestly think CNN is using their competitive time slots for philanthropy?

"You never want a serious crisis to go to waste." - Rahm Emanuel

If we really wanted to ensure Trayvon Martin's killing was not in vain, we'd stop perpetuating negative images that are now synonymous with black men in America. We'd stop rapping about selling drugs and killing niggas. The next time we saw a man beating a woman, we'd call for help or break it up, but one thing we would not do is stand by with our cellphones out -- yelling WORLDSTAR! Instead of rewarding kids for memorization, we'd reward them for independent and critical thinking.

We'd spend less time subconsciously repeating lyrics about death and murder and more time understanding why we are so willing to twerk to songs that bemean women and boast of having things we cannot afford. We'd set examples of self-love for our youth by honoring our own hair, skin and eye color. We'd stop spending money on designer gear that we should be spending on our physical and psychological health. We'd seek information outside the corporate owned-media that manipulates us. We'd stop letting television babysit our kids and we'd quit regurgitating pundits we haven't come up with on our own.

Education, introspection, self-love and excellence are the only ways to overcome the wrath of ignorance. So before going back to popping molly and getting Turnt Up, I urge you to consider the implications of your actions. Your child's life may depend on it.

Is it possible that Al Sharpton is the anti christ? Was there a point when this guy wasn't pure evil? He's to black people what fox news is to old people; scare the crap out of them and rile them up for your own profit.

Sharpton loons like a space alien. WTF. His head is enormous.

LOL. I was about to say the same thing. He must lose a lot of weight. I still remember how big he was at the T. Bradley hoax years ago. Tracksuit and all.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/george-zimmerman-emerged-hiding-truck-crash-rescue/story?id=19735432

George Zimmerman, who has been in hiding since he was acquitted of murder in the death of Trayvon Martin, emerged to help rescue someone who was trapped in an overturned truck, police said today.

Sanford Police Department Capt. Jim McAuliffe told ABC News that Zimmerman "pulled an individual from a truck that had rolled over" at the intersection of a Florida highway last week. Florida Highway Patrol is now handling the case, McAuliffe said.

The crash occurred at the intersection of I-4 and route 417, police said. The crash site is less than a mile from where he shot Martin.
