Unactivated iPhone as iPod Touch?

MotionMan

Lifer
I was given an old iPhone (I think it is an original, at best a 3G). It has an unused sim card (that belonged to the former owner). The iPhone is in restore mode. When I hook it to iTunes, it wants me to activate it.

I just want to use it as an iPod Touch, not as a phone.

Is there a way to do that (without jailbreaking)?

Apparently, I need to unlock the phone (but I do not need (or want) to jailbreak it).

How do I unlock a 2g?

You have to contact the original provider and ask them to unlock the phone.
Shouldn't be a problem after it is out of contract. You just need to look up the IMIE. (settings/about)
Apple may be able to do it if that is not an option.
I have two phones running as ipod touch.
Neither have been jailbroken. They don't need a SIM. Only activated,

dunno bout that i took my iphone 3gS brand new sim and threw it in and it activated quite fine. then put it back in my iphone 3gS.

I most certainly did the same with my ipad uSIM - threw it in the iphone 4 since i was too impatient to wait for business services to open up 😉

I used my friend's ATT sim to activate my iPhone 3g. Then, I put it in airplane mode and used it as a iPod Touch. I don't think I needed to jb or unlock it.

Apparently, you can do what I want with a 3g or later without unlocking/jailbreaking. The 2g's require unlocking. I went to the ATT store yesterday and they sent me to a repair place "to do what needs to be done". The guy at the store will unlock it for $20.

I tried jailbreaking/unlocking it last night. I keep getting a "1604" error (on multiple cables and ports).

I need to replace the screen anyway (which I will not try myself), so I may just pay the $20 rather than spend more time on it.

SO the cracked screen will cost me $115 to replace. The guy says it is expensive because the touch screen and the glass are one piece.

Does this sound right?

The digitizer is laminated to the glass sure, but at least with the 3G and 3GS, the replacements are like $20 on amazon. Finding one for the original iPhone is trickier (based on my 2 minute search at work) it seems, but should still be possible.

I think that what would be more fair is that the iPhone 1 costs so much to fix because of the monumental pain in the ass it is to get it open.
