Hey hey everybody,

I hadn't really paid much attention lately to my home PC's updating (or lack of lol)

Anyhow, I went in today and checked with 'winver' - and it came back with the above level (1803 17134.286)

So I did a manual check for updates and it listed 1803 17134.407 (aka KB KB4467702)

Naturally I let it do it's thing and it came back with a failure to install - Error 0x80070057

So I did a little digging here and went back to a post by Puffnstuff for the next update right after the one my PC is on, hoping maybe to take 'baby-steps' on up to the most current one

It looks like the next update after the one my PC is on is KB4458469 - 17134.320 from September timeframe - d'oh!

I went ahead and downloaded the standalone installer from the link provided:

http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4458469

I chose the top one since I'm on Win10-64 bit Pro

It ran for a while, appeared to be doing stuff like copying files to the windows update cache, then said 'installing' with the little progress bar moving ever so slowly to about where the word 'installing' is, then suddenly went all the way to the end with 'The following updates were not installed'.......blargh!

It kinda seems like it may be puking on some sort of file verification or whatnot. Is there a log somewhere I can peruse?

Perhaps the event viewer may shed some light *shrugs*

Edit: I should've looked there before lol. Mr. Event Viewer, while vague, at least had the sense to post something lol:

Windows update "Update for Windows (KB4458469)" could not be installed because of error 2147942487 "The parameter is incorrect." (Command line: ""C:\WINDOWS\system32\wusa.exe" "C:\Users\MrBlotto\Desktop\windows10.0-kb4458469-v2-x64_1f4f81ab4628364d0136a708bda0ad6bde8046e7.msu" ")

So, I guess.......some....parameter is incorrect? That's helpful.......maybe...sorta...kinda :/

Anyhow, perhaps someone out there can shed some light on this comedy of errors. And, who knows, it may help other peeps as well :)

TLDR;
-Stuck on older version of Win10
-Standalone update goes boom
-incremental standalone update goes boom
-'parameter is incorrect' message in event viewer - wtf?

An .iso file for the latest Windows 10 version 1809 can be downloaded direct from Microsoft. Then right-click "Mount" the .iso file. Run the setup.exe from the mounted disk, and so then an "in place update" should be able to overcome the glitch. Afterwards, re-check for available additional updates.
No guarantees, but that's the procedure that I'd recommend.

it is Not uncommon to get stuck on an older Updates especially with Middle Age Computers ( about three years and older), or and, computers that Upgraded doing inplace from Win7.

Best way is to do what vailr suggested above.

ISO, or Flash Drive from here.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Make sure that you have at least 10GB available on the HD/SSD.

Boot from the current Win 10 1803 and do an inplace Upgrade.

If it succeeds, run Win10 native Disk Cleanup after the Install.

If it will not succeed, it will revert back to the 1803, in most cases it means that there is some hardware/bios incompatibility that affects past the last update.

My 1803 Windows 10 PCs, are NOT downloading the (fixed) 1809 when I manually check for updates. It seems that MS is being more cautious in deploying 1809.

An .iso file for the latest Windows 10 version 1809 can be downloaded direct from Microsoft..

This is what I'd recommend too, as I've done it on a few of my W10 machines now--though I've just used the Update Assistant from the desktop. Takes awhile, but pretty self-explanatory.

The big Win10 updates are essentially OS upgrades anyway, so as has been said, an in-place upgrade with newest iso is often the best way to go. I think we've all experienced multiple Windows Update failures before, countless hours lost.

Thank you all. I'm in the midst of making a bootable USB right now.

And Macrium just finished with backing up too, so that's a plus as well!

Edit: For some reason the above never got posted lol. After the update I went here to .......uhhhh...update you and what I had typed was still in the window, just waiting for me to mash 'reply'......meh, go figure

I ran the 'in place upgrade' and now winver says 1809 17763.134, so I'll call that a win!

My KB didn't work at first (Log. G15), and the mouse buttons seems reversed (Log MX518), but I managed to fumble my way to 'check for updates', it found a couple, and upon reboot everything appears to be working correctly. Dunno if it was the last batch of updates or a simple reboot, but both peripherals are good to go now

Thanx again everyone :)
