Hello,
I have Realteak RT8811AU network adapter connected via USB to my desktop computer for wifi connections. I get greater network speed but however, I am unable to set it to wake on lan. I have a ASUS
P5Q Pro LGA 775 motherboard and on my bios I have setup to wave via PCIe and PCI devices(basically every device option I have). However, I go to the 'Power Management' or the Realteak adapter via 'Device Manager' I see no way effect of setting the 'Allow this device to wake the computer' option. In order to check this option I have to check 'Allow this computer to turn off this device' option which in some forums they have been saying is the reason WOL doesn't work because the computer turns off the network adapter. If I select the 'Allow this computer to turn off this device' option and then select the 'Allow this device to wake the computer' option and deselect the 'Allow this computer to turn off this device' option that also doesn't work. And there is no way to select the 'Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer'. Also I have set the setting to have the computer not be able to turn off the usb devices. I have read several forum posts but unable to solve this problem.

You can't wake up a laptop/PC equipped with external USB Wireless adapter.

Limitations
Although functional, WoWLAN does have some serious practical limitations. These limitations are fairly significant, and will likely prevent many organizations from deploying WoWLAN.

- Integrated Adapters Required - The wireless adapter is required to be integrated onto the motherboard in order to control the power state of the workstation (this category also includes mini-PCI and mini-PCIe adapters). Newer motherboards and plug-in wireless adapters do not have the required power connector and cable as some older systems provided. Therefore, external adapters that are not integrated into the motherboard will not be able to control the power circuity and thus cannot support WoWLAN.

blah, blah, blah.

So that only leaves with an option to leave the PC on. Does someone have a rough idea about how much that would add to my electricity bill. I know it is long shot because it depends upon the desktop etc. but I am guessing it won't hit the $30 range in California

Why don't you use built-in wired ethernet? Because it's only 100Mbps and slower than your ISP speed?

You can purchase a gigabit ethernet card, wired it to your gigabit router and take advantage of WOL.

No ethernet port near my computer that I can connect to. The other option is powerline adapters. 100 Mbps will be more than enough.

Someone tried powerline adapter. It worked first than stopped working.

Googled and could not find much info about WOWLAN. Guess most vendors do not support the function, even mini PCIE wifi ones.

My Laptop's Realtek mini PCIE RTL8188EE does not have the feature.

There is a solution that works many times.

Instead of Wireless USB use a Wireless Router that can be configured as a Client Wireless (Wireless Bridge.

The Router can be placed near the computer and connect via short CAT6 to the computer's NIC.

From the point of view of the computer it is connected via Wire and thus WOL would work.

The Electricity toll of Keeping a Wireless Router on 24/7 is much less than a computer. In most cases Wireless Bridge would work better than USB because most of them have better Antenna.
