Unable to send emails through Thunderbird

I setup a PC for my Grandmother. She is able to receive messages (the inbox loads when opening the program). After typing an email and clicking "Send", the window pops up showing "Sending Message". The progress bar goes back and forth like it is working, but it never finishes. I let it sit for more than 5 minutes. No changes. I can click "Cancel" on the window, now unable to edit or try sending again. I have to close and start again.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

a) Is it possible that some antivirus or firewall software needs to be set to allow or trust Thunderbird?

In my own case, I had to set thunderbird.exe as a "trusted zone" in Kaspersky Anti-Virus before e-mail would work. So maybe it's something like that in your case too?

b) In Thunderbird drop down menu Tools / OPtions / General tab / Connection Settings button, make sure the radio button is checked for "direct connection to internet." I doubt your grandma is connecting through a proxy, right?

c) In Thunderbird drop down menu Tools / Account Settings, verify that you entered the name of the outgoing mail server properly. An easily made mistake is to enter the server name as though it were an e-mail address, like mail@sb.net when it's supposed to be mail.sb.net (@ instead of . ) I do that sometimes.

Thanks for your reply Scott!

I had checked the internet connection in Thunderbird. It was set to direct. Using Qwest DSL. No proxy. At the time of this issue, Computer Associates Internet Secucrity 2007 was installed. I decided that stuff was crap, uninstalled it and went for Avast AntiVirus and ZoneAlarm Free Firewall. Same issue. I use hotmail as well. I am going to get it setup on my PC. If I can get it to work, I will start over on hers and try again. I will post my results.

Pretty certain it's the Outgoing Address (SMPT) settings under Account Settings. I'd suggest you go to the Support Section of your ISP and see what the SMPT is supposed to be. Most of the time it's smtp-server. and it's what follows the . that seems to vary from ISP to ISP. You could also call the ISP's support. This is such a common problems ISPs have the answer easily accessible either on line or voice support

Try this, use the outgoing mail server of whatever ISP you are using. aka smtp.comcast.net etc.
