Unable to run dual displays on Win7 Ultimate

Really hoping to find some help here. I have been looking everywhere. I have a Dell Vostro 220 with a Core2Quad and 4GB(3GB usable) Ram running Win7 Ultimate 32bit. When I was running WinXP Pro, I was able to extend the display onto both monitors. Now, I am only able to clone the displays, which is basically pointless. Whenever I try the setting to extend the display, after clicking apply and ok, it just reverts back to the one display. I first tried NVIDIA GeForce 9500GT. I installed there latest driver and after checking the forums there, people are saying the drivers do not support extended displays in Win7. This totally blew my mind as I could not believe it. So then I try an ATI card this morning with there latest driver. I am getting the same results. I have submitted a ticket with Gigabyte(maker of this ATI card) but no answer yet. This is very frustrating not being able to work with extended displays. I figure technology is supposed to be getting better and not losing the ability to do what one was able to do before. If anyone has any suggestions, besides reverting back to WinXP Pro, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Chad

I seem to recall seeing that problem when I was setting up my three-monitor rig. I'm trying to recall what was causing it.

Be assured that Win7 Ultimate DOES support an extended desktop across two (and more) monitors. I use that setup daily, along with a HDTV running on a second PCI-E video card.

I believe that it does as well, because the option is there to do it. But anytime I select that option then click on Apply and Ok, it does not apply it and just shows that it is on the single monitor setting. If it comes to you, please let me know. And if anyone else as seen this, please let me know. I have tried both NVIDIA and an ATI card with there latest drivers, and cleaning the drivers off the system before installing a new one.
Thanks

You didn't say what resolution you are trying to run at or how much memory the video card has. I ran into that problem with an older AGP video card and a pair of new 22-inch monitors. But I wouldn't expect it to be a problem with such monitors and at least 256 MB of video memory.

The first card I tried was an NVIDIA running 128MB, the second was and NVIDIA running 512MB, and currently I have an ATI running 256MB. Reso on these screens is 1920x1080.

Edit: I should add again that I CAN run both at these at that reso in the Cloned mode.

What monitors are you using and how do you have them hooked up? DVI? Dsub?

Maybe try with another set. I heard of issues with win 7 and CRT support (stuck at 60hz)

Just set the main display now to 800x600. Then tried the setting to extend the display. It still did not work, and also automatically changed the reso back to the 1920x1080.
