I don't use remote desktop much, but I think it may be a better option to access my fileserver. I have some shares set up for the drives on that fileserver, and can access those from my main rig. But the remote desktop connection isn't working. I have the allow remote users to connect to this computer option checked.

I get an error saying the client could not connect to the remote computer when I attempt to connect. Both computers are on the the MSHOME workgroup, connected by a linksys router. I think I have it all set up right, but I am obviously missing something.

What OS is the file server? Is there a firewall enabled on the file server?

To amplify stash's questions:
There are three requirements for a working RDP connection:

1) Your "Server" must offer Remote Desktop server services. OSes that include a RDP server include XP Professional (not XP Home), Windows Server 2000 and 2003, and Vista Business and Ultimate.

2) You must allow incoming TCP Port 3389 connections on your "Server"

3) You must enable Remote Desktop Connections on the "Server" and must select acceptable remote login accounts on your "Server'.
