I have a Yamaha 4416S cd writer.
Firmware is updated to v1.0j .
Writer working on a ASUS P2B-S motherboard.
This board has SCSI onboard.
Driver is Adaptec AIC-7890/AIC-7891 - Ultra2SCSI for the SCSI controller.

I run XP Pro on a Pentium II 400mhz with 128mb internal mem.

When burning under Nero 5.5.8.2 the burning and verification are ok.
However when reinserting Win XP cannot read the cd.
Cd is either damagad or not compatible with XP.
Burning under XP gives similar results.
I have quite a pile of useless cd's by now.

In order to reserve memory and avoid buffer underruns I burn with a minimum of other programs running and no screensaver

Under Win ME burning was ok, but I got increasing problems...
Often after burning the files (either data files or an iso image) were recognized as 1 audiofile.
I was using several burning progs..Winoncd, Nero etc.

The Ahead site recognises the problem and under FAQ suggested to remove a number of drivers...causing a fierce crash.
That's when I decided to instal XP
However...the problem has not beem solved.
I now can't burn at all.
The writer still reads older cd's (of the same make)

Is it a question of more internal memory?
I somehow doubt it.
Any suggestions apart from buying a new writer?

Just off the cuff, I would guess bad media. Maybe try a better grade of media and try again. Also if you are using 700MB disks ensure your writer will work with them... some wont properly write to them.

With a tweak tool I have turned off all autoplay functions
I now can read cd's with mp3 and simple data which was directly copied from explorer.
However cd's burned from images on HD to cd r are still unreadable.(even though Nero verify function was used).
This smells of a software problem with XP.
But how to solve it?
Any suggestions?

It's a four year old burner and is probably dieing. You can get a new 40x+ IDE burner for $20-50 with a little searching, or a 12x10x32x SCSI Plextor for around $100-125 with a little looking. That's what I'd do unless you are really attached to your Yamaha. I had a 4416S that I dumped a few years ago when it started to die. I moved to Plextor and never looked back.
