Unable to print in grayscale

I have an HP 990cse printer, the black cartridge is new and works fine, the color is old, and only red comes out unevenly, blue and yellow ouput nil. I'm also using the standard 990c driver that comes with Winxp. I've setup the printing preferences to be black and white. I've set the printing defaults preferences to be black & white. I tried printing an image in black and white from Firefox, but it still prints it in red & black. Then I cut and pasted the image into irfanview (freeware image viewer) and printed in black & white - same. Then I converted the image to grayscale and printed it in black & white - same. At last I saved the grayscale copy and opened it back up in firefox. Somehow, it is still printing red from a grayscale image. There is no 'gray' output in the printout, just black, white and shades of red. Of course, you can't print at all unless there is a color and black cartridge in the printer.

Any advice?
