Unable to install Vista

Hi

I downloaded RC1 from Microsoft's website using their download manager. After the download was finished, the file left over was vista.iso.dlm . I tried to install on my pc 2-3times but it shows an error around 60%.
I also tried on another sempron based rig and it didn't proceed after 23%.

What could be the problem?

maybe the problem is you don't know what you are doing?

you are the master of Overclocking...you should be able to figure out a little problem like this

1)The system in on stock.

2)I am not a master overclocker.

3)I am the master of nOOb overclocking for AMD64.

4)This problem is not related to overclocking.

I think this: " vista.iso.dlm " is the problem. How big is this file? Did you burn an ISO file to a DVD ?

I downloaded the file and it shows as vista.iso.dlm, I am downloading it again and I think the new one is also showing as iso.dlm. Anybody else downloaded from MS website.

I even renamed to .iso and then the file type it showed was .iso. But it still gave me an error.

the site provides a MD5 hash so you can verify you download isn't corrupted. Just run md5sum on the file and compare the number with the one given by Microsoft.

The .dlm should not be there once the download completes, which makes me think it's not dowloading correctly. There are direct links to the .iso files on the right side of the page so you dont have to use the provided download manager (which has caused a lot of problems for a lot of people). I suggest you try re-downloading the iso from there.

I don't want to do the iso directly becoz it would take about 24-30hrs and I don't want the comp to be turned or internet to go down during that time which has a probabilty of atleast 50%.

Should I do one thing, use an external download manager to download the iso directly?

no, it will end in .iso, which you can then burn to DVD as an image

the .dlm was a temporary file extension left behind by the download manager that should have been removed after successful completion of the download

That's up to you. It's been so long since I've felt the need to use one, I wouldn't even know what to recommend anymore. I'm sure some quick searches with your favorite search engine should provide you with something useful 🙂

I downloaded the x32 version with the download manager, it took 24 hours - could have been 12 but the download was frequently interrupted with messages like "connection broken", I had to resume 3 or 4 times.

At the end you get the .ISO extension, nothing else.

I used GetRight 5.2 to download the x64 version, split in 4. It took also 24 hours, but it 3.5Gb.

For x32 did you use MS's download manager?
I used the very same but got vista.iso.dlm
I am currentyl using Flashget and it is very very slow

I had the same issue, so I just downloaded the directly using firefox. Think maybe issue with dl manager and firefox. edit: the dl manager wouldn't work right but did leave an incomplete file iso.dlm

If you can't even download it correctly now, you'll have no chance of getting it to work, when you do get it downloaded.

I suggest you stick to pen and paper...your computer skills are exceptionally poor.
