Unable to flash BIOS of HP Pavilion in DOS environment

Here's the situation:
The CPU died on a family member's HP Pavilion a6720y. The stock processor was an AMD Phenom X4 9550. Those are not easy processors to find in stock anymore, but I was able to find an OEM 9850 at TigerDirect. It's a little faster, but still the AM2+ chipset.

After swapping the proc, I get an error at post telling me that the processor isn't supported. I know it's compatible with the motherboard (Pegatron M2N78-LA), so I'm hoping a BIOS flash to unlock support for this proc. The problem is that all the BIOS updates provided by HP are .exe files that must be run in a Windows environment (I'm told it doesn't have the necessary .bin file packaged in the installer file?), which I am unable to boot into.

I have a bootable USB drive, and can consistently boot into a DOS environment without crashing, so I need to find a utility that will allow me to flash the BIOS of an HP computer in a DOS environment.

Any takers? 🙂

I still have the old proc in there, which will let me run for about 15 minutes in a dos environment before crashing. The moment I try to boot into any operating system with a GUI, it will lock up and just give me a black screen. I've replaced nearly every part on this computer, and I was was convinced it was the motherboard until swapping that failed to resolve the issue. I supposed it's possible that both the motherboard AND processor are bad...
