current version 1.20, i suspect that it should show up as asus crw-5224a, not crw-5224a for it to be flashable? this is very frustrating as the firmware update to 1.36 kept saying device not found! WTH?! is their away to rename drive name so the software would accept the flash?
I bought this from www.us-depot.com, why would they do such a thing like this?
fvcking modified drive name to make it not flashable. Grrr...

the firmware updaters from asus tend to have problems with winxp (and if i remember right also with win2k)

have you tried attaching the drive to a win98 or winme machine and re-running the update?

i cannot flash like i said because some evil technician hacked the firmware to make it not flashable. this sucks oh well i got burned from cheap vendor who is selling cheap stuff and this drive burn 20 sec slower then my 48x liteon at 52x.
the drive show up as
[_____cdr-5224a]
^^^ see the blank? the asus name was deleted?! asus burner user can confirm this thought.
i'm stuck at 1.20 which is dated 5 months ago.

still should be several ways for you to update the firmware

how do you know its an asus drive? does it say asus on the label or something? it may be as asus that was rebadged for some other company.

the best place by far to get info on how to flash cdrw drives, and how more specifically (what you probably need) is how to flash a rebadged asus drive... by the way once you flash your drive to a true asus with asus firmware you will be able to in the future use any of the new asus firmware without problem

but here is the site i was refering to http://forum.firmware-flash.com/search.php?sid=8e0ef719c3637f32e75864f7682c0ee9
in the first box just copy/paste "crw-5224a" (and i would leave the " ") hit search and you will find the info you need

but your drive is probably a cendyne or verbatim or something like that (that is actually a rebadged asus)

its not a cendyne or a verbatim, as noted it is a generic asus drive.
oh well, its one piece of crap if you ask me. never buy anything cheap from untrusty merchant. thought they claimed that this is an asus, it is a lie because theres no way to flash it even the chipset are unidentifiable! it say unknown chipset, wtf? when try to use some other .bin flasher instead of asus .exe flasher that check for exact drive name.

you are confusing me... how do you know its not a verbatim or a cendyne?

when cendyne rebadges an asus drive what they do is use a real asus cdrw drive and change the firmeware (thats why the name doesnt read the exact same)
