Unable to download patches from several websites

I've tried downloading patches from a couple different site including Atari and Nero. It appears that these are FTP downloads, not HTTP. When I click on the download link, nothing happens at either of these sites. I need certain downloads but something is preventing them from occuring. Could it be a problem with Win XP SP2 or perhaps Firewall settings or even Pop-up blocking? I've temperarily disabled pop-up blocker in IE, but it didn't resolve that problem.

Help!

In the Internet Options > Advanced menu, try toggling Use Passive FTP, close all IE windows, then open IE and try again.

Use Passive FTP was already checked by default - I tried unchecking it but the download hangs eitherway.

This is very puzzling. I may have to try this on my other PC (Win 2k)

UPDATE:

I was able to successfully download the patches on my other Win2K box. So obviously there is some setting on this Win XP SP2 box that is preventing the downloads from occuring.

*bump*

Need help on this still. My Win2K box downloads stuff fine, but my new XP SP2 box has problems with some sites, maybe they are just FTP sites. But it's a pain to have to go DL stuff on my other box, copy them to a USB Thumb drive and bring them over here. That is just stupid.

Some sites will not let you download unless you allw their cookies. Check to see if that is turned on or off in your XP box. Same for pop-up blocker. Many downloads require a pop-up window. If you have the blocker on, it won't happen.

I have WinXP SP2 home with defaults I asume. Cookies must be enabled because my forum logins are automatic (wouldn't be if cookies weren't enabled). I did try turning of the pop-up blocker but that didn't change anything for the Atari and Nero websites which are FTP not HTTP downloads.

I have indeed have had problems with pop-up blocker allowing the download window to open, but usually I can click on the link "if download dialogue box does not automatically open, click here" and it works. With Nero and Atari websites, the window opens but nothing happens. So it's a different' problem.

It will be interesting to see if things change when my McAffee Security trail subscription expires and I uninstall that software! Maybe there is a firewall rule preventing FTP?

tech, I just downloaded nero from there website using WINXP home edition with no problem all settings intact - popblock on, firewall enabled and use norton and Spysweeper by the way. Try disabling McAffee and see what happens. Perhaps it's your link?? What are you after??? Try this as a 'test',

ftp://ftp2.de.nero.com/softwar...urningROM/nero6603.exe

Bugs

Agree with disabling McAfee. A lot of that depends on how your have it configured.

Do you have any additional FTP software that might be handling the FTP 'call', rather than it being passed to your browser to handle? If you've installed, say, CuteFTP, that can cause your browser to pass FTP:\\ documents to CuteFTP, rather than handling them internally.

I don't have any additional software that I am aware of. But Dell computers ship with a bunch of junk and it haven't wanted to delete it unless I knew it wouldn't be needed. The McAfee Security center has been used has it was configured out of the box, but it is a 3 month trial subscription - when that expires I will be uninstalling it and using other software I have.

I'm sure it isn't Windows XP that is causing the problem as it should be able to do standard stuff.
