Unable to download FTP, issues with HTTP too.

I've got a fairly new Dell Dimension 8400 computer which came with Win XP SP2 and McAffee Security center, all with stock out of the box settings.

I have never been able to download any files via FTP since I've had the computer, only HTTP and then the window never opens up - even after I disable the pop-up blocker. I always have to click on the link that says "if download doesn't start automatically, click here". If that option doesn't exist, I get no download via HTTP either.

This condition is unacceptable, any idea what is going on?

Does a yellow bar appear at the top of the page?

Anyway, disable any "Internet Security" or "Firewall" program and see if the FTP issues resolve. However, make sure your computer has all of the latest Critical Updates from www.windowsupdate.com before you disable your firewall. Windows XP also has a built-in firewall that can be enabled, disabled, or configured through the Control Panel.

Internet Explorer's built-in pop-up blocking can be enabled/disabled from the Status Bar at the bottom; click in each of the blank boxes until you find the right one. If you can't find it on the Status Bar, click Tools>Internet Options>Privacy> and disable pop-up blocking.

Thanks,

I found I had both Windows firewall AND McAfee firewall enabled and there was a message stating that only one should be. I disabled Windows firewall and left McAfee on and see what happens. If that doesn't work, I'll look at the securty settings you mentioned.

McAfee is more likely to block something that it shouldn't than the Windows Firewall.

Also, did you check to see if a yellow bar appears at the top of the browser window (below the toolbars, but above the page) when you try the download?

Update:

On another forum, it was suggested I disable Windows Firewall - which is turned on in SP2 automatically. I turned it off and guess what! I can now do FTP downloads!

My system has McAfee Security center and Windows firewalls, both activated out of the box. Shutting off Windows firewall but leaving McAfee on seems to have resolved the problem. Another user reported the same problem and it was resolved the same way!

There we go.
