So i'm trying to do something to mix it up on my c720p so I thought it'd be fun to try some kind of linux. I see a few walkthroughs etc on the topic, most are for crouton. I want to try a true distro like the HugeGreenBugs versions for the c720p so I have tried creating a bootable usb,and doing the developer stuff to boot to the usb drive but when I do, it goes to a screen that says Grub.

I have no idea what to do here? None of the guides mention this. Help?

Your usb install might not be right. Sounds like grub(the bootloader) got installed without pointing to a valid o/s. I'd try to create the usb install again, and/or trying a different usb stick. Some work better than others for reasons unknown to me.

So through those damn walkthroughs I created a big partition on my chromebook to install the linux OS on, now I'm failing at the install or having issues, and when I powerwash or use the recovery disk, I cant get the partition back!

How do I recover my space!!
