unable to deactivate LAN connection

somehow I managed to setup my home network, consisting of
  • new PC (Asus P4C800-E deluxe) under Win XP
  • old PC under Win98
  • DSL Router D-Link DI-604
While the Win98 PC connection into the internet runs rockstable, the XP doesn't. After half an hour or so of stable operation, ping's against the router start to results in a timeout. So far, deactivating the LAN connection (under XP) and activating it again in most cases cured the problem. Since a week or so, even that is impossible. When I try to deactivate the LAN, it now tells me that I'm not allowed so - either because of a protocol not supporting plug & play (???) or someone else (maybe the system account) has established the connection. In this case, restarting the PC doesn't help - I need to switch it off and wait for ~5mins. before restarting. Then it works again.

Any idea in which corner to search for a solution ? Is there anything wrong with the onboard ethernet port of the P4C800-E ? or is it a hidden XP setting ?

Could check the card prperties to see what link speed it's set to. Auto-Select/100Mbps/10Mbps, etc. I'd set it to Auto as default unless that's causein trouble. Then you could try something eise. Also if yo uhave an external NIC around, pop that in and use that and see if it helps. Could help rule out a hardware PC issue versus a router issue,

Yeah try another NIC card, if not try lowering the speed to 10half duplex or full duplex.
or it could be as simple as a bad cable.

Thanks for your quick replies.

The card properties have been set to AutoSelect all the time; I'll try lower speeds now, but it'll take some time until success can really be confirmed, since the problem happens really sporadically. B.t.w. - what is a NIC card (Network Interface Card ???). If it's an ethernet adapter, I don't have a one.

But maybe we can try to work the other problem in parallel - why can't I deactivate the LAN connection, who may be blocking this ?

WinXP Network is much more stable and capable than Win98se.

I do not know where you are trying to deactivating the LAN. But from the way you talk about it seems that your Network Card is not installed correctly.

Take out the Network card (or disable it in the Mobo if it is OnBoard card) let Windows boot to safety mode, go to the device manager and clean it up from Ghosts, and uninstall the NIC part. Reboot One time without the card. Insert back the NIC, and install the drivers correctly.

Jack,
you can deactivate the LAN by double-clicking that connection in the "network connections" window of the system control panel. Then a status window pops up where you find the deactivate button. I use this for resetting the LAN connection after a hangup.

I followed your advice and reinstalled the LAN driver - now I can deactivate and activate the LAN connection. Obviously the driver must have been corrupted.

The root cause however for these hangups seems to be the speed setting of the ethernet port. It was set to "auto" (i.e. up to 1000 Mb/s) all the time. I changed it to 100 Mb/s full duplex (which is the actual LAN speed due to the router's capabilities), and I didn't have a hangup since a couple of hours. Oh yes, I had one - but that was immediately after reinstalling the LAN driver, which set the speed to "auto" again. After changing that again, everythings looks fine so far.

So thank you all for your valid help !
