I got the above message, and followed by "XMS Driver not installed".
I am trying to load Win98/se onto a just built computer. Bios works ok.
What is happening, and how do I correct it.
I have run Western Digital Data Lifeguard Tools v 2.8 10/01 to format the drive.

Delete both your Autoexec.bat file and config.sys file. The A20 Line thingy disappeared with Windows 3.X. Then try booting and see if you still get it. If so, then it is probably a line in your Win.INI or SYS.INI file, and you need to find it and REM it out with a ";".

This was probably caused by the WDC proprietary disk prep software . . . something I don't believe in using. It creates problems of its own. Use a standard Win98SE boot floppy, Unless it is an upgrade version, it should come with one.

You are much better off setting up and formatting with FDISK from an old DOS disk than using these proprietary shortcut programns that come with most HDDs.

Go study the Microsoft Knowledge Base . . . this relates to DOS configuration files set up by the WDC software . . . a fix is to REM out a line or make sure HIMEM.SYS is in a different area.

Thanks for the advice.
I tried Fdisk, and I also tried another drive, which unfortunately is a Western Digital.
The same error comes up. It happens when I use a Win 95 or Win 98/se startup or CD rom disk.
Could this be a problem with my RAM?

I don't get as far as you think. The CD drive loops with an error message about XMS driver failure. There is no autoexec.bat or config written the the C: drive.

Oh, BTW, what's a PM?

Thanks

I know this may sound stupid, but disable L2 cache in the bios until after the install...
