Unable to connect to web sites over network

Hey Everyone.
I'm running a computer on Windows XP Home and trying to go online via a computer network in my dorm room. It can connect to the network using both ethernet and wireless connections, but no web sites will load over either connection.

This same computer had no problem connecting wired or wireless at my home (running off a router and Comcast Internet) and loading web sites. I can ping IPs in the local network but nothing on the web. I have tried resetting the TCP/IP stack and disabling windows firewall and my McAfee virus scanner.

Does anyone have any tips on why I cannot access any web sites? IE will say "web site found. Waiting for reply." and never go beyond that point. The connection in the room is fine and works off another machine, and the network is recognized. Can anyone help? Thanks. :(

How about running the following three commands on both computers (working and non-working) and reporting the results back?

Command Prompt:
"Ping 216.109.112.135"
"Ping yahoo.com"
"IPConfig /all"

You should see replies from the "Ping 216.109.112.135" command.
You should, at least, see the words, "Pinging 216.109.112.135 with 32 bytes of data:" with the "Ping Yahoo.com" command.
The response to the "IPConfig /all" commands should be almost identical on both computers.

Three points:

1. No web sites will load? Interesting. How about other internet services such as IM, auto-updating, FTP? Let us know if other internet services work. Sometimes, the browser is not configured correctly.

2. Some university network requires students to register their computers. Check with your school's ITS for more info.

3. Trouble shooting sucks and I know it. Be patient and dont be afraid to ask for help. In a large dorm, there is always one or two computer geeks that are willing help.

Thanks for the replies. No internet functionality at all. No successful pings outside of the network. Their tech support is outsourced since its an off-campus building. I'll try them again, but they haven't been much help so far.

Did this problem JUST occur? Was everything working OK at one point, or has the problem always existed?

1) Report back the results of an "IPConfig /all" command from a "working" and a "non-working" PC. - This will identify TCP/IP configuration issues.
2) Install a second browser (like Opera or FireFox) and see if the problem still occurs. - If a second browser works, then it's possibly a problem with your Browser. Could be spyware damage or a zillion other things. You can also re-install Internet Explorer.

I'd also check to see if IE has some kind of web proxy settings set that are preventing you from browsing. Internet Options/Connections/Lan Settings/Proxy Server box.

I would contact your Network Admin. They could have a firewall blocking you from getting out to the internet. Try using tracert on your network to see which hop isn't letting you passed.

"tracert 216.109.112.135"
"tracert yahoo.com"
