At home, we have a cable modem plugged into a router for our family's computers.

I'm trying to share files between 2 of the computers, so that one of them shares a folder and them other one can acess it.

The message I'm getting is that the non-sharing computer is unable to browse the network.

I've checked to make sure they're on the same workgroup, each has a unique name, each has tcp/ip installed, bound to the network card, set as the default protocol, are both logging on as client for MS network, and the first one has a folder that's being shared...in each case, DNS is disabled, there is no gateway, and DHCP is being used.

Am I missing anything? any idea why I cant even browse the network? (i've even shutdown zonealarm on the 2 machines, still no good). please help

If you are using 2000 or xp on either computer you have to go to user/passwords in the control panel and put in user and password if applicable of the other machine.

One other thing I have not been able to use tcp/ip to share files for some reason, I have similar setup as you. What I did was install netbuei on both machines. I still have problem with this setup occasionally. usually doing a search for the other machine usually fixes it. I will watch this thread maybe I can pickup some pointers.

Hope this helps.

Got it solved...

first of all, both machines were running 98. I wound up setting them both up to share a folder, but found that A could see B but B couldnt even browse the network. This was with TCP/IP...I then installed netBeui but had the same problem.

I finally solved it when I realized that comp B was, despite being set to use the client for MS network, not logging on to any network. I wound up finding a registry hint online, that if I went to localmachine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\network\real mode net and deleted the key "autologon" the machine would give me a window to logon to a MS network on the next reboot.

thanks for the help, hope the above paragraph comes in handy for someone in the future.

I have problems with XP Pro as well, I can use the network setup utility, run on both computers, get it all setup where both computers share files just great, but on next bootup XP cant find the other computer. It still lists the shared folders on the other computer but when I try to access them I get an error message something to the effect that I may not have permission to access. I even mapped her folders to the My Computer and as stated it all works peachy till I reboot or startup the next day and the mapped drives are X'd out and unable to be accessed. Im a network newbie but it seems like Ive gotten everything done according to the setup procedures but still no go.
