Unable to boot up

My hard drive had been threatening to fail the last few weeks, so I ordered a replacement SSD, mounting kit, cables etc. And of course on the very day the last item I need arrives, I run into this issue.

When I attempt to startup I get the message "3rd slave hard disk: S.M.A.R.T. Status BAD, Backup and Replace" and "Press 'DEL' to Resume".

Previously I could just hit DEL and get in. However, nothing happens now when I hit DEL. The keyboard is responsive though, as toggling the CAPSlock, NUMlock, and Scrolllock keys seems to toggle the corresponding lights on the keyboard too.

The only other key that does anything is TAB, which brings me to the BIOSTAR (Smart) page, that doesn't really have anything useful besides saying you can hit TAB to show text screen, DEL to enter BIOS setup, F9 to select a boot device, or F12 to enter BIO-FLASHER utility.

No other keys seems to work at this stage except hitting TAB again, which brings me to a blank page just showing the American Megatrends logo. Then I'm stuck here and can't go anywhere else.

Am I royally screwed? Is there anything I can try to get a successful boot up? And if not, what are my options?

only start with your ssd, unplug the hdd

This. What was on the hard drive that failed? Your best shot would be taking that drive out and installing your SSD, installing your OS, and then plugging in your old hard drive to see if anything can be read off of it.

Your computer may just be freezing as it struggles to boot off your failing hard drive.
