Unable to boot from HD in AHCI mode

I reorganized my HTPC yesterday with some parts from some other computers, and tried to do a fresh Windows 7 install. En route to solving another problem, I discovered that if I put it into AHCI mode, I can't boot (it says BootMgr is missing).

But even if I try to do a brand new install on the hard drive, it still won't let me boot and says the same thing. I thought if I did a new install in AHCI mode it would work?

What am I missing? I should put my SSD in AHCI if I can, right?

My hardware:
Gigabyte P55M-UD2 (just updated to BIOS F11)
Adata 64 GB SSD
i7 920 CPU
8 GB RAM (two sets of two 2 GB sticks at different timings)

OS is Windows 7 Pro

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions...

Do you have the drive connected to the white or blue controller when you are doing the install? The blue ones are the intel controller and Win7 has a default driver.

Well, it seemed to get working, for reasons that aren't totally clear to me. I ended up reinstalling like four times, and one of them seemed to take. I wish I knew why.

Thanks for the help anyway guys!
