Unable to associate .doc/.docx files with MS Word 2007

I am using Microsoft Word 2007 and I have a problem double-clicking on a Word file(*.doc, *.docx, etc.) to open the document. When I double-click on the file, Word will open, but the document itself will not appear in Word. Instead, I get a message that says,

"Windows cannot find 'C:\Users\Nick\Desktop\wordfile.docx'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."

I tried to reassociate the file with Word, but I get the same result. I've even uninstalled/reinstalled Word, but to no avail.

Can anyone shed some light?
