unable to access shares in same workgroup

Weird issue. I have 2 computers attached to the same router/switch but one cannot access the other by dns name. If I plug in the IP address, it connects fine without prompting me for user/pass and shows the available shares, but if I try to reach it by the computer name, no dice. It won't work, prompts me for user/pass (which is the same on both computers), but always fails saying it is not valid.

Ideas? This has always been problematic for me. Both are using windows 7.

I have had similar issues in Win 7. My resolution (albeit not a secure one) was to make "Everyone" the owner of the top level directory of the share (and I inherited that down through all subdirectories) and then game full permissions to Everyone (not in the share but in Windows itself). This solved my problem because I was unable to Homegroup the 2 computers. both wanted to make their own Homegroup and refused to join the others...weird.

Under control panel>network and sharing>change advanced sharing settings under password protected sharing do you have it turned off on both computers?

EDIT:Also if you click start>computer>right click on c:>properties>sharing>is sharing enabled on both computers?
