He probably signaled for a breaking ball low. Thought it was going to break hard into the dirt so he tried to preemptively block it so there'd be less of a chance of the runner advancing.

I pitched in High School and there is absolutely no way. First off if it is a breaking ball there is no way he comes out of his catching stance and then attempts to trap a ball. If that ball came all the way back to where the catcher squatted down to it would have been an impossible 5'+ break- I don't think a whiffleball could break that much.

That is a classless move from that team. If I were the Ump I would walked off right then and there. Absolutely inexcusable!

From your post it clearly looks that you don't know dick about baseball. ;)

the catcher got his offer to walk on to a college team revoked

isn't this borderline criminal assault?

Looking at the ball instead of the ground probably would have helped him block the ball.

I just remembered that I wrote a paper in college regarding violence in sports. I devoted a whole section to brush-backs and take-out slides (breaking up double plays) in baseball. I wonder if I still have it somewhere.

well first off the pitcher has good control. that was a solid hit on the face mask.

good that the catcher was told not to bother trying out. hopefully the pitcher gets in trouble also.

Why? All he did was throw the ball, it's what they do.
