Story

LOS ANGELES -- Home-plate umpire Kerwin Danley briefly lost consciousness after being hit under the jaw with a 96 mph fastball in the fourth inning of the Dodgers-Rockies game on Saturday night, and after a delay was taken from the field on an ambulance.

The pitch from the Dodgers' Brad Penny, the first of the inning with Garrett Atkins batting, ticked off the glove of Dodgers catcher Russell Martin. Danley went straight to the dirt behind home plate.

Shortly thereafter, players were ordered from the field and an ambulance was driven to the plate area, where Danley was placed on a stretcher after being attended to by Dodgers trainers Stan Conte and Todd Tomczyk.

The ball hit him on the jaw and he lost consciousness "for a couple of seconds," according to a member of the Dodgers' public relations staff, adding that when the ambulance took him away, he was coherent, breathing and conscious. Danley was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, and Dodgers medical personnel went with him.

Danley, 46, has been an umpire in the Majors since 1998. Saturday night's game was in his hometown of Los Angeles. He is the crew chief working with Angel Campos at first base, Brian Runge at second and Greg Gibson at third. Campos took over behind the plate.

Holy JEEBUS that had to hurt.

At a Texas A&M game earlier this year, someone hit a foul ball right down the line and the ump tried to get out of the way of the ball...but he ended up diving right into its path and got smacked in the head. Luckily, he was fine after a minute.

I thought those masks actually do protect them. I mean, foul balls get deflected off their masks all the time and the speeds aren't cushioned all that much then either.

It did hit him on the mask, no?

EDIT> they say it hit him in the jaw but i don't see any room for that where the mask isn't.

No.

If you watch the video or read any of the related articles you will see that it hit him under/to the side of the mask, in the jaw.

It is one of those freak things where everything lines up just so to allow the ball to hit skin. I use to get that a lot when I played catcher.

I'd cry like a little girl if that happened to me, after I regained consciousness that is.

I hope his recovery goes well and that there won't be any permanent bone/ligament/tissue damage. =)

I was hit in the head by a 'fastball' in little league back in the day. Granted, it certainly was not going at 96 mph, but it still knocked me out for about a minute and hurt like hell. Poor guy.

I got smacked in the nose when standing three yards from our pitcher. The little assfuck, douche bag, wise and beautiful woman face, dick sucker thought it would be funny to throw a fastball at my head when we were supposed to be tossing the ball back and forth underhand. The ball jammed my nose back slightly into my skull. I blacked out for about one minute and blood was everywhere.

My extremely intelligent coaches kept asking me if I had insurance, and then drove me to my dads work instead of taking me to the emergency room.
