here's my advice, buddy. Wait for the Througoughbread/pentium4 wars to pan out then wait till the hammer comes down and once you see what the hammer can do (at the end of this year) make a decision from that. At that time the Hammer will be costing around 400-500$ if I estimate correctly and should outperform a Pentium4 running 3.0GHZ plus, from speculation. Then you can get whatever you want, and feel better that you avoided the market when things were just getting shaken up. Wait till the market settles down for a while and AMD gets their newest part out and then things 'll be really exciting. That, plus the fact that there's this new graphics card comming out later in the year (NV30) and you'll want prices on that to drop because it's Nvidia's new architecutre and from what i'm heard it's gonne be one killer chip!!

If you think you should need a new PC, just go for it.
If you're waiting for the price to drop, you'll wait forever.
You want an XP1800 now, but if you wait for 2 more years, you might get an XP 3500 MHz for the same amount of money

I bought my TBird 1.2GHz with Iwill KK-266 in a "flamming hot deal" for $350 in March 2001. :(
Now I could get an XP-2GHz with a better MB for the same amount of money. Do I regret? No. Because I think I still got a good deal comparing to what I had to pay for a Pentium 100 MHz with an Intel Endeavor MB in 1995.

The waiting game sucks... I'm in a similar boat as QTPie... About 6 months ago I just up and did a 1.2 Tbird/MSI K7T 266 combination. The palamino was out but the prices were still high.

Your best bet is if you are wanting a new setup now, buy now, but don't buy the latest and greatest. Buy a notch or two below it. There's no point in paying the higher premium as far as I'm concerned.

Word. Buy now- the XP 1900+ is currently offering the best bang for your buck.

Just got for the XP/mobo setup now and if it stops running apps fine anytime soon (which I highly doubt it will), then grab a T-bred when they come out. T-breds'll work on Athlon mobos, so why worry? When the newer things come out there'll be something else new on the horizon to wait for. Grab what ya need now and upgrade later.
