Hi all,

I have no clue as to whats wrong with my computer so I am giving it a go here...

I installed Windows Vista Upgrade on my Windows XP installation. Everything went smooth and I have been using Vista for 4-5 days.

Anyways, last night, while I was asleep, the power was cut off so I woke up this morning, tried to turn on my computer and after the initial BIOS screens, got the error message which said:

"BOOTMGR missing. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart."

So I searched on Google and found out all I need to do is put in my Vista DVD and run the diagnostic tool. It will fix it and I will be all ready to go. So I pop in my Vista DVD, reboot the system, and now nothing comes up on the screen. The monitor's signal light blinks... and nothing else.

Anyone know what could be the problem?

:(

Thanks.

Does MS provide support on stuff like this? This is a legit copy of Windows that messed up my computer so they should help me fix it. GRR.

i'm wondering the same thing right now. Right now i have dual boot vista/xp. XP has the boot manager file, so if i boot up from my Vista hard drive it's missing. Evntually i want to delete Vista from one of the hard drives, but then i'm worried that vista won't boot without that boot manager file. how do i put it on there without reformatting?

are you running vista on a different partition? try messing with the boot order of your drives int he bios. If I switch the boot priority to include my storage drive(no OS on it) before my drive with my OS i get that messege that you get.

my Vista doesn't seem to boot without the Vista DVD in the drive. If I set boot order to the partition that vista is installed on (my only OS installed on the entire system), it gives me that BOOTMGR error. Seems the only way I can boot into Vista is to set my first boot device to the DVD drive and let it load. It'll say "press any key to boot from cd or dvd", but I just don't press anything and let it load normally and it works.

I have no idea what's going on why does it need the Vista DVD to get into the system and it doesn't work otherwise?

check these settings. windows explination:

Change the default operating system for startup (multiboot)

If you have more than one operating system installed on your computer, you can choose which one starts when you turn on your computer. More than one operating system installed on a computer is often called a multiboot configuration.

Click to open System.

Click Advanced System Settings. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Click the Advanced tab, and then, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.

Under System startup, in the Default operating system list, click the operating system that you want to use when you turn on or restart your computer.

Tip
To be able to choose which operating system to use when you turn on your computer, make sure the Time to display list of operating systems check box is selected, and then click the number of seconds that you want the list of available operating systems displayed before the default operating system starts automatically.

My problem is I don't get anything on the monitor so there's no way I can change any of the settings. Last time I saw anything on my monitor was when I set my boot order to DVD drive first and restarted... check the first post in this thread for more info. Thanks.
