UMAX SCSI scanner and card

I have a UMAX 1200S scanner and the included SCSI card (ISA). I also have another SCSI card, Tekram 390, to which a Plextor CD-ROM and Yamaha CD-RW are attached. Questions:

1) Would it make sense to connect my scanner to the external connector of the Tekram (I would need an adaptor) and ditch the ISA card?
2) Would that speed up the scanning process at all or reduce the system resources used while scanning?
3) Would it potentially slow down the CD-ROM or burner connected to the internal connector?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Since the SCSI card included with your UMAX scanner is an ISA card, I would definitely attach your scanner to your PCI Tekram card. Your PCI SCSI card can transfer data without using up CPU cycles but your ISA SCSI card can't.

I was in your situation and tried my scanner on the included ISA SCSI card. When I scanned something my system froze completely until the scan was done. When I connected my scanner to my PCI SCSI card, I could do other things while my scanner was scanning.

Same here with me. Throw away that ISA card. I am using an ASUS PCI card and things are much faster. Just pay attention to connections and termination and you should have no problems. Also I switched over to the Magic Scan software v4.3 from their site and it is much better than the Vista Scan. It's the one that ships with the Professional scanners, not the consumer scanners.

Thanks for the help. Now I just need a converter to connect to my external connector. Anyone know where I could find one cheap?
